Power Control - Hard Decisions

The site of the recently restored Braddock Lighthouse. Aircraft hangars and other X-Men facilities, including a Cerebra unit and the Danger Room have been constructed around the foundations of the lighthouse.

Power Control - Hard Decisions

Postby Ryan Gabriel » Wed Dec 17, 2014 11:23 pm

Today's power control class wasn't in a field, it wasn't in a forest, it wasn't even in a blank Danger Room. Today's class seemed to be in an oversized version of the Blackbird, extended to give people some room to move around and to put some working surfaces at the seats. There was a slight, gentle motion that hinted at it being in flight.

Ryan was, as usual, going over his notes on his own screen, this time up in front of the cockpit door.

"Close to it. I played with the dimensions to make it more comfortable, since it's still... well, you know, a plane. Even if it's an awesome plane."

Miranda wandered in, pausing briefly as she saw the setup. That seemed to stir some strange memories for her, but she pushed forward and took a seat, "Hi, Mr. Gabriel."

Elise was sitting in one of the seats looking a little less than colorful today. A bag in one hand and a bottle of water in the other, she groaned. Something about flying in actual planes made her motion sick. Flying with her wings? Perfectly fine. But a jet or any plane for that matter? No good.

Ryan frowned, looking around for the telltale 'off' feeling he was getting. It didn't take him long to spot Elise and her predicament. Trying to look nonchalant, he accessed the room controls and turned off the flight motion for now.

Elise began to get a bit more color in her face, but she was not about to move. Strangely enough, Wiggles and Frankie weren't around. At least, not manifested.

Why are we doing this?
It's part of training.
Training sucks.
El...I don't feel good.
I know, I know...I'm sure it'll get better. It doesn't feel so bad anymore.

Mizuki would see, out the window, alarmingly, smoke rising from below them. They didn't have a good angle to see what the surface looked like, unfortunately, but signs pointed toward some sort of trouble down there.

Jennifer looks like she's in a similar boat as Elise, if less pukey and more unsteady on her legs. She's holding on to a bulkhead until the flight motions subside.

Re: Power Control - Hard Decisions

Postby Ryan Gabriel » Thu Dec 18, 2014 4:11 pm

"Excelent question!" Ryan said. "And the answer is, it's nowhere. Or rather, it's not a real city. I try not to blow up real cities for classes." He pressed a few keys on his pad, and a holodisplay appeared, showing a part of the city, notably the harbor. It was, to say the least, a mess. There were fires in various places, rubble strewn about... something had exploded, and from the blast pattern, it had been a building they were over.

"Today's class is a practical exercise in power use and judgement. Disaster management is something X-Men have to deal with a lot, more often than fighting super-jerks if you'd believe it. So we're going to see how well you can do here. We're hovering over an evacuated city where a gas explosion has devastated the area. Rescue work has already been done, we're not going to worry about that right now. But we are going to worry about two things."

"First, area safety. You're going to make sure there's nothing left feeding the fires. There's a live gas line in there somewhere, you need to find it and identify it so that it can be shut off and the fires can be put out."

"Second, collateral damage. You're going to find any additional problems that might have been caused by this that need to be contained. The first one to say 'all the buildings are wrecked' or something wise-ass like that gets a detention."

"This isn't time sensitive, there's nothing that you have to rush to figure out. The situation isn't going to really get any worse down there unless you do something to make it worse. So you have the time to just relax and think."

"Questions?"

"It's just normal natural gas, like you'd have in any gas line in any city. It's the active line you need to identify," Ryan clarified.

"True natural gas has no smell. Did the city produce it's own gas or was it piped in? If the city has it's own source it'll be tricky, if it was piped in, the added "scent" would have been added at the main plant and will make it easier to find."

"Well...if it was pumped in then the, yes, it would smell, but if this city had it's own plant then the actually area could be leaking, not just the known pipes. You know, the explosion messing up the ground and opening pockets of untapped gas."

"We won't! We can do this, guys!" Haley said cheerfully. Her recent win for the capture the flag seems to have given her an appetite for superhero work. "We've got like. A ton of stuff to work with. You're like. A genius or something right Blaine? You can help us like prop up buildings that might fall. And...maybe Jennifer and me can find people with our telepathy...and uh Vertie....you could like have animals help us find things we need....and i can make force fields and stuff too..."

She nodded excitedly at Graham. "We'll totes need your good senses. And El, you can fly! We could fly together and look over everything. And....and Paul you can open portals to get to hard to reach places and ....oooh Alex, a strong metal guy. You can lift stuff and ant you like suck up metal to get it out of the way?"

Perfect! Oh man, this is going to be amazing!"
