Sept 8 - Common Room - Not your usual homework

Brigid sits in front of one of the coffee tables in the common room, her face lined in concentration. What stands in front of her appears to be a game of Jenga. Carefully, she takes a piece from the middle and places it on top.

Murphy falls through the ceiling and the Jenga tower, staying phased the entire time, before coming to rest uncomfortably underneath the coffee table.

"Hello!" Murphy says.

Brigid grits her teeth as her concentration breaks. The tower tumbles, and the piece in her hand goes flying to embed itself in a nearby bulletin board.

"...dammit! A little warning next time, Mini-Murphy?"

"Holy cow! You skewered that bulletin board," Murphy says. "Wow!"

She sits up without thinking and her hyper-dense body crashes through the coffee table.

"Oh my god that was so dumb. I'm sorry!"

"...well I had to clean it up anyway," she sighs, getting up and going to get the piece lodged in the corkboard.

"I guess this is why they wanted me to do it in public. My concentration is crap."

"Pfffffffffft," Murphy says, sitting down on the couch. "Concentration is overrated. You start thinking and you keep thinking and pretty soon you can't stop. You're just thinking all the time. It's way better to act first and think later. Ya know?"

"Well the idea is I need to get my powers to do useful things," she says as she yanks the wooden piece from the bulletin board.

"Projectile board games pieces are frowned upon in polite company."

"Well, I dunno about that. All I know is that I get in the worst trouble when I'm thinking about my powers," Murphy says. "If I'm not paying attention it's easy."

"It's not that my powers don't work without concentration, just that if I go on instinct... well, that happens," she says with a gesture back at the bulletin board as she walks to the table to pick up the Jenga pieces.

"Well, I mean, how often do you have to focus on eating when you're not trying to use your powers? Ya just do it," Murphy says. "An old guy once told me <something that sounds like Chinese?>."

"Ooh! Ooh!" Murphy says, suddenly having an idea, "We should try reversing it! What if I attack you when you aren't expecting it? Then maybe you'll do something not so violent instead!"

"Yeah. They treat each other like people who know each other," Murphy says. "Ya might wear a suit and tie when at a job interview but that don't mean that's your real self and you're not the type of person that likes to wander around in sweatpants and a sportsbra."

"If someone's a jerk to their siblings, they're probably just a jerk," Murphy shrugs.
