October 2 - We'll leave out the eye of newt this time

Up until recently maintained as a museum, the childhood home of the Braddock family has been pressed into service as additional housing and classroom space for the Institute. Additionally, the increased demands have led to the main ballroom being converted into a cafeteria for both the Institute and those University students on a meal plan. Student reactions have been mixed, and reports of paranormal activity are as of yet unsubstantiated.

October 2 - We'll leave out the eye of newt this time

Victoria was in the kitchen, humming as she got ready to cook. All she needed now were the ingredients. They were... fairly important. And someone to eat with. That was also fairly important.

Theresa came in with some reusable shopping bags loaded with stuff. She set them gently next to the counter. "Here you go," she said, stretching her arms. A quick glance in the bags proved that Theresa actually had a fairly decent eye for good ingredients.

Victoria started unloading the bags onto the counter, looking them over as she did. "Very nice, very nice... I'm going to need to send you shopping again, you're a lot more reliable than the kitchen staff," she said with a smirk.

"I may start charging a small fee or just taking a tax of the results," she said, going to wash her hands.

"I'm hardly going to send you shopping and not feed you, darling," she said as she started cutting up the tomatoes.

"So, my dear, I believe you wanted to have a little chat?"

She nodded, taking a long moment to finish her hand washing before answering. "I did. You seemed to understand at least a little of what I was getting at. You'll forgive me if I'm vague. I'm still trying to figure out how to describe it outside my head. I've... spoken with something a lot bigger than myself."

Victoria nodded as she turned the stove on. "What were you doing to get the conversation started, dear? Oh, and spicy or not spicy?"

At that, Victoria almost cut herself. She didn't drop the knife as she wheeled on Theresa. "Swear to me on your life that you turned him down!"

Theresa held up her hands, a little shocked at the intensity of the response, "I swear on my life and Mother Nature I turned the creepy little bastard down."

Victoria relaxed visibly, then looked down, noticing the knife she was still holding. "...Sorry," she said, looking more than a little flustered as she put the knife down, moving on to prep that didn't involve sharp things. "That little bastard is bad news. 'Lose your soul' bad news."

"Gaea, the earthmother, nature incarnate. The last of the so-called 'elder gods,' the only one of them that didn't turn into some horrid demon. Such as the one sending that fucking little dwarf around to tempt all of us."

"Well, like I kind of know when something's wrong with the area. Like when Vivienne showed up yesterday, I felt that. It was a disruption. I can also tell you that the garden isn't quite as healthy in places as it looks."

"All right, I think, my dear," Victoria said as stirred the meat around in the pan with the sauce, splashing some wine on. "I think we need to start at the beginning and not leave any steps out. Be long winded, please."

By the time she finished, Victoria was looking at her over her plate, her expression guarded. When she finished, Victoria sighed and took a bite. "Must be rather lovely to have a goddess in your corner. Everything that talks to me wants to make bargains that'll screw me over."

"Ohhhhh I don't know, that rabbit hole falls pretty far," Victoria admitted. "I'm not sure what it means myself... our elders seem to be rather... active lately, though. I mean, it could be entirely coincidence that the Morrigan has decided to take an avatar and that Sekhmet is calling a priestess, and now Gaea is speaking to you. I sincerely doubt it, though."

"I'm falling down the rabbit hole now regardless." She leaned back in her chair as she considered Victoria. "I need to understand what I can. Things have decided to involve me and I... well... I don't want to show up to the battle of wits unarmed so to speak."

Victoria considered it. "Not going to lie, I'm going to need help, too. My power's at an ebb, and nothing seems to be slowing down as far as 'crazy shit' is concerned."

"The question is, can you actually believe in what you do. Knowing magic and nature as a fact is one thing. To move farther, you have to believe in the spirit of it, as well."

"I could tell you the way I treat what I do has entirely changed. I don't like to force the weather to bend to my will anymore. It just feels... wrong to do that. I work with it more now." She leaned on her hands and looked at Victoria. "Beyond that, I don't know what I could tell you. I could say 'sure, I believe in the spirit', but at this point, you'd have no reason to believe it."

"Well, I don't think you're a liar," Victoria said. "So I don't have a reason to not believe you. And there comes a point when one has to start making their own spells instead of copying what's already been done."
