Orientation: What Was Once Lost

Up until recently maintained as a museum, the childhood home of the Braddock family has been pressed into service as additional housing and classroom space for the Institute. Additionally, the increased demands have led to the main ballroom being converted into a cafeteria for both the Institute and those University students on a meal plan. Student reactions have been mixed, and reports of paranormal activity are as of yet unsubstantiated.

Riding up on her bike, Anika comes to a halt and peers around the grounds with her helmet on. She notes the hustle bustle of people and tries to see if she can pick out the one she's looking for; her sister.

At that moment, Gemma was crossing the grounds, heading back towards the university dorms, sliding away from people as much as she could. That sort of movement made her particularly conspicuous.

Her breath caught when she picked out Gemma, a big smile forming on her face. Popping off the helmet, she paused before calling for her. Why is she walking that way? Weirdo. She then called for her. Loudly, flailing her arms with a big grin on her face. "Gemma! Hey!" She wasn't being subtle at all, and didn't give one damn about being loud.

Gemma looked up to see who was calling her names. She tilted her head, as if trying to figure out who this person was that was calling for her. Then she got a deer-in-the-headlights look that would have been a bit much even on Graham. Still, to her credit, she started walking to her sister, giving her a timid wave back.

Tossing the kickstand down, she hops off the bike and hangs the helmet on the handlebars. After that, it was all over. She went running to Gemma, looking to be ready to topple her over with a huge hug.

Gemma managed to brace a little bit, but toppling her wasn't particularly difficult. She hit the ground with a whoofing sound and as soon as she recovered her breath, she said, "Hey, Anika."

"Holy shit, Gemma, it's been too long." She hugs her sister tight, as if once she lets go she could lose her again. After a few moments though, she releases Gemma from the hug of doom and stands, offering to help her sister up. "Sorry about that." Grins wide.

"How've you been? In fact, *where* have you been? Took a lot of work to try to find you. You know what? Let's get going and you can tell me as I drive. I brought you an extra helmet." She turns to begin to walk back to her bike.

"Who knows. Away? We could get our own place. Got the money saved up for a small apartment, and I imagine I could find a job bartending pretty easy. Hey what is this place, anyway? It's fancy." She seems to not have actually looked into the place she was told Gemma was going to be at.

"No shit? You got accepted into a fancy university like this? I'm impressed! What are you majoring in?" She seems genuinely interested in what her sister is up to, and her vibrant personality only intensifies that.

"Well, they kind of had to take me in. It's... a sort of treatment release thing. I don't really have a major yet." She seems really uncomfortable talking about it.

The slightest flicker of a flame can be seen in her eyes. "Yes well, maybe they should have actually tried to help you with it themselves rather than just being rid of you as if you were nothing." It's clear the topic of their parents is a bit of a button for her. "And maybe, just maybe, if they wouldn't have tried to hide you like you were some sort of monster, then we'd have learned to help you control things without you having to go to a damn hospital. Did they confine you? Did they drug you?"

"The hospital did when it was necessary." Gemma was obviously getting upset as she said, "Mum and Dad did what they could, but even you know I couldn't have stayed in Cardiff. I would have hurt somebody!" This is probably a shock to those nearby who've seen Gemma around campus in the last few days as she's actually raised her voice about something.

She raises her voice as well. "We could have managed, Gemma. They didn't have to send you away as if you were an animal that needed to be caged. You're not a monster, and you're not an animal. We could have figured something out! They shouldn't have sent you away! Are they gonna drug you here too? Gemma I swear if they try to put their hands on you here..." More flickers of fire and heat begins to radiate off of her.

"You'll what? Torch them?" She said, shying away from the flames even though she knew very well they couldn't hurt her. Her own eyes, which finally met Anika's, were starting to glow golden. "Mum and Dad did what they thought was best!" Her voice quavered a little as if she was trying to hang on.

"I won't let anyone hurt you or take you away from me again. No matter what it takes. That is a promise." She watches Gemma for a few moments before simply stepping forward and hugging her. "I...I'm sorry. I just don't want you to go away again." Her voice is softer now, and it's clear she is only passionate because she cares.

Gemma sagged against Anika. She was very warm to the touch. "I appreciate it, Anika," she said, struggling for words like a drowning person struggling for breath, "But I think you may need to run."

She lets go only slightly and raises a brow. "When have I ever ran from you?" Smirks. "I'm here for you. Not going anywhere. That includes when your temper gets the best of you." She stands there, unmoving. It seems she doesn't seem to care what's about to happen. That, or she thinks she can handle it. "Hit me with your best shot, Gemma. I'm not going anywhere."

The change is rapid, far more rapid than Anika might have witnessed previously. But unlike the bone-popping, muscle-rearranging noises that come with other shifters, this change is accompanied by the sound of grinding stone and the hiss of super-heated air. Gemma's now-draconic head glowers down at Anika, before her lower jaw unhinges and a gout of flame launches at Anika.

Anika just...stands there, waiting for the flames to reach her. Once they do, she holds up a hand and sort of 'catches' them as if it's a ball. Moving her hand over the flames, she forms them into a neat orb. "You've gotten better at that, sis. I have to say I'm pretty damn impressed. Did you learn that from the hospital? Or yourself?" It was a genuine question, but she soon realized it may be taken in a hostile way, especially to someone who's angry.

It was unclear whether the words had gotten through or not, but Gemma roared in frustration and one of her forelegs lashed out at Anika in the four-legged equivalent of a backhand.

Her eyes widen and she goes to dodge, but...*SMACK*! Anika goes flying off to the side. Tasting some blood, she groans and rubs at her face. "....Ow. You know, that was a bit overboard." Even if it doesn't get through to Gemma, she says it anyway, speaking as she picks herself up and begins to run towards Gemma from the side. "Unfair advantage, you know!"

That isn't terribly difficult as Gemma is kind of big and clumsy. She does, however, start flapping her wings, an action which might be detrimental to someone on her back depending on where they were.

"Shi- GEMMA! RELAX!" She clings on for dear life, taking the brunt of the hits of the wings. Trying hard to reach near Gemma's head, she crawls across Gemma's back, each hit causing her to grunt, but she stays determined.

Apparently the beating wings wasn't just to dislodge her as she gets clear of the wings and notices that they're now in the air. Which probably makes the black and orange-glowing dragon pretty visible to most of the grounds.

"Ah shit..." She clings harder. Heights were *not* her thing. However, one thing she takes note of is if there are any fires that happen to be starting on the grounds from the whole lava dragon.

Gemma seems to see what she's looking for, tucking her wings and diving. She snags something from the ground and begins flapping hard to gain altitude again. A quick look reveals the snagged item to be Anika's motorcycle.

"No...no no NO! GEMMA!" She seems to have snapped at this point, fire surrounding her and the rest of her leather beginning to burn. Gritting her teeth, she hugs tight to Gemma in an attempt to drain out power of the fire within her to Anika's own being.

Gemma winged over and headed out towards the coast, though her glow began to fade. "You may want to consider the fall that will result if I don't have wings anymore," Gemma said in a deep, rumbling voice.
