During Orientation: Miranda/Maya's Room

Up until recently maintained as a museum, the childhood home of the Braddock family has been pressed into service as additional housing and classroom space for the Institute. Additionally, the increased demands have led to the main ballroom being converted into a cafeteria for both the Institute and those University students on a meal plan. Student reactions have been mixed, and reports of paranormal activity are as of yet unsubstantiated.

During Orientation: Miranda/Maya's Room

Postby Maya Mills » Fri Sep 26, 2014 11:28 am

Maya sits on the floor in front of the door, curled into a ball with her face buried into her knees.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.

She really didn't want to cry in public, but she couldn't go into the room. The door was closed, but it wasn't locked. Anyone could be inside.

Jennifer knocks on the wall as she walks up the hallway so she doesn't surprise the girl.

"Can I come closer or are you going to run off again?"

Maya looks up, "Oh, hey."

"No. You're fine. You didn't do anything wrong."

"Are you sure? Cause people tell me listening to peoples' thoughts upsets them. Not that I really try, it just kinda happens." she says, sitting down next to Maya.

"I'm used to it," Maya says. "I mean, not really, but I think people know what I'm thinking all the time. Even though I know they can't."

"I guess it's sorta nice to have it be true for once."

"I know what you mean! I thought I was hearing voices in my head, you know, like the crazy people kind of hearing voices? Turns out I was just actually hearing voices in my head. It's pretty weird."

"Yeah. My doctor says they're 'intrusive thoughts'," Maya explains. "Things like that get stuck in my head and they won't go away."

"I'd never actually do that stuff," Maya says.

Maya shakes her head, "OCD. If I lie, I have panic attacks. All I can think about is that people will find out."

"It's just easier not to lie."

"It's way more likely I'd fall down the stairs in this place. Break my neck. Just a loud, crunching, crack and then it goes dark," Maya says. "...What is with all the stairs? It's like an Escher painting."

Crashing to the bottom of the elevator shaft. Jennifer's broken body twisted like a rag doll in the wreckage.

"Yeah, maybe that' s for the best," Maya says.

"That's a bit safer, at least," Maya says. She didn't think the manor had fire escapes. Did it? She should check.

There's no one inside, of course. Why would there be? It's not like there was anyone going around trying to break into people's rooms.

Maya had already moved her stuff in and it was...very organized. Everything was labeled and set into very exact spaces. Her clothes in the closet were arraged by outfit and day of the week. Books, DVD's, and music were arranged by genre and alphabetically. And wherever she could, Maya had arranged everything in fours. Four pencils, four pens, and four notebooks on her desk. Four pillows on her bed.

Maya sighed, relaxing a bit now that she was in a safe space.

"Thanks," Maya says.

"Wow, it's like I walked into one of those fake rooms at the furniture store." she says, picking up one of the pencils and putting it more or less back in the right place.

Even though it was in exactly the right spot, Maya still went over and adjusted it slightly.

"Thanks," Maya says. "I try to keep it nice. In case anyone sees it. Visitors, roommates, burglars...ghosts."
