"I think so. Miranda turned the water back on and I think I'm okay right now but I couldn't, like, breath at all when I turned the simulation off..." she says, trying not to sound as worried as she actually is.

Ryan logged into the Danger Room computer and pulled up its readings on Kay's current condition. "How long have you been underwater, Kay?"

"I dunno. Like an hour or so? I was testing how far I could go and just kept going deeper for a while till I found these really cool glowing jellyfish..."

"Yeah, I've been to over half a mile before, but I got spooked because it was so dark then. This time I just kept going cause I thought if there's something scary I could just turn the simulation off..."

"That could be it... surfacing too fast is dangerous for divers. You're adapted to it, so this might just be your body keeping you underwater until it's ready to start breathing air again."

"All right, this is what we're going to do. I'm going to bring the water level down so that you can keep your head above water and your gills covered. Just relax, it's going to be fine."

"Okay..." she says dubiously, carefully poking part of her head out of the water, keeping her neck submerged. "And now?"

"So were the jellyfish just added into the program? Or had you just never gotten down to them?" he asked, trying to keep her engaged and not thinking about the pressing problem.

Ryan checked the logs. "And then you just shut the Danger Room off when you were... wow, that's deep. Yyyeah, you don't want to turn it off when you don't have your feet on solid ground, trust me on that one."

Ryan gives her a thumbs up. "Miranda, decompression takes a while. Why don't you head back to the dorms, I have some program updates to go over with Kay so she isn't stuck there bored."

"Not very," Ryan said. "Give me a minute."

He walked out of the observation booth, and a minute later splashed into the pool that was the Danger Room. "So," he said as he walked/swam over. "How much does it make you want to hit me when I say something like 'these things happen'?"

"I dunno... A little?" she asks, suspecting some kind of trick question. "If you can shoot lasers and you get, like, a twitch and keep shooting lasers that kinda makes sense but forgetting how to breathe is like forgetting how to walk or eat..."

"You haven't forgotten a thing," Ryan said. "Your body supports two completely separate respiratory systems, and it started doing that less than a year ago." He reached out, his hand and eyes glowing as he used his power to make sure her lungs weren't, well, dead or otherwise shutting down. "The thing about physical mutations is that having gills, wings, six arms, whatever doesn't mean you or your body instantly knows how to make them work right. Something like switching between your gills and your lungs can hit a snag without an obvious reason and still fall within 'normal development.'"

Her lungs are fine, though they almost feel 'dormant', as if they're not quite connected to Kay's lifeforce right now as a normal person's lungs, which makes sense considering they're not what is providing her with oxygen right now.

"Then how do I unsnag them?"

"Keep trying," he said, with a shrug. "Take your time. Like I said, this could just be a shock to your system from going from deep water to nothing instantly. It might just need some time for everything to stablize again."

"Right now, I can think of about three ways that will probably force your body to start breathing air again. The most reliable ones need the med lab. So it's not like we're in a crisis, but the best thing for your body is to sort it out on its own."

"Well, regardless, you won't be. But all right. Let's see if I can make your lungs decide to wake up." His hand lit up again as he touched it to her back, trying to see if he could energize her lungs enough to switch them into an active state.

It... kind of works. Her lungs twitch a little and she spits out some water, but when she tries to take a breath her throat seems to clench up and she starts coughing until she dips under water again.

"I was afraid of that. I was hoping this would just be in case this happened again, but... all right. Here we go." He activated the synthesizer, and a sort of collar appeared in the air in front of him to take. "All right... this should fit over your gills. We tried to get the design slim enough that it wouldn't be too obvious under a shirt that hides your gills. I know it's not ideal, but try it on."

"Well, it will keep water over your gills so you don't have to stick to the pool or the beach or the danger room. So... I guess you'd call it that. Just change the water in it twice a day, and the air circulators in it should do the rest." He looked apologetic as he handed it to her. "If you need the design changed to hide it better, we can do that, within reason."

Kay just takes the collar and puts it on with a resigned expression on her face.

"How bad does it look?" she asks, trying to glance down at it herself while her gills flare inside the collar, clearly visible inside the breathing apparatus.
