"What kind of trouble?" she asks, opening the door to let Miranda in. "Because here that can range from 'I cheated on a math test' over 'I snuck off on a jet to the Savage Land' to 'I'm cursed by an ancient spider cult'."
"They were hassling me about taking too long and then one of them called me 'fat' and the other one teased me about being 'coddled by Weaver'... whatever that means. She explained later what being a teacher's pet meant."
"No, you shouldn't have. Not that what they did was much better, but that doesn't excuse it. I won't ask you to apologize to them, because that's just cruel, but I can't let you go entirely unpunished."
"Maybe..." She looked at her feet as if she was seeing through the floor. "I guess I'm afraid that maybe putting my head back together wasn't a good idea. What if I was a bad person before... you know?"
"I do understand that. But even if you were, you've been given a new start. And the fact that you even worry about this is a good sign too, don't you think?" she smiles.
"I don't know," she said, taking a seat, a series of actions that might be third or fourth on the list of actions Nailah expected her to take. "I want to know more about me and I don't."
Nailah puts her hand to her forehead, closing her eyes for a moment as Miranda goes out of sequence to her precognition.
"Just... let it happen naturally. All your classmates are trying to figure out who they are as well. Try to focus on who you are now and not on what that means for who you might have been."
"What? Oh, no no. I'm just having a hard time predicting you right now. You're jumping ahead and it's throwing me off. You sat down before you were supposed to and now I'm out of synch with everything."
"It's hard to predict a failure to correctly predict something. It's like trying to stand between two mirrors and trying to find the point where the reflections end."
"I'll do my best." She stood up, "Going back to the library for more books now. I've been reading about the Egyptians, but I want to read about the Greeks now."
