I12DT: On Dark Angels

[Nick Varkan]

After the security meeting, Nick went to see Professor Weaver on a vague gut feeling. He didn't like talking to her, but she might just know something. He knocked on the door, a little reluctantly.

[Nailah Weaver]

"Come on in, Nick." she calls, sounding... cheerful?

[Nick Varkan]

He did so.

O...kay?

"Someone's sure in a good mood," he said.

[Nailah Weaver]

"I've had a nice enough day. How can I help you?"

[Nick Varkan]

"You heard about the thief in the Danger Room, right?"

[Nailah Weaver]

"What's this now? No, what thief?"

[Nick Varkan]

"A woman with some kind of freaky space warping powers teleported in and ripped one of the projectors out of the wall. Me, the new security hire, and a few of the highschoolers tried to stop her, but she got away."

[Nailah Weaver]

"Oh boy... And you came to me with this, because..." she asks, though she sounds like she has her suspicions already.

[Nick Varkan]

"Because Hino's fancy facial recognition software thinks she looked a hell of a lot like you. A relative maybe?"

[Nailah Weaver]

Just great.

"Did she have black wings?"

[Nick Varkan]

"Yeah. So you do know her."

[Nailah Weaver]

"Kind of, I suppose. She's --ah-- she's a time-traveler."

[Nick Varkan]

Nick blinked, frowning.

"And the fact we have a time-traveler lurking around was kept secret from the rest of us... why?"

[Nailah Weaver]

"We didn't think she was still around. I also didn't think she would try to steal things because she should know better."

[Nick Varkan]

"Because...?" he fished, suspecting the answer.

[Nailah Weaver]

"Because I like to think I will have raised her better than that."

[Nick Varkan]

He had seen it coming but groaned anyway.

"In others words you took her intentions at face value because of parental wishful thinking?"

[Nailah Weaver]

"If that's how you want to see it. Did she say anything?"

[Nick Varkan]

"Nothing useful."

[Nailah Weaver]

"And what did she steal? Did she hurt anybody?"

[Nick Varkan]

"Precisely, a hard light unit. And no, she didn't."

[Nailah Weaver]

She sighs. "Okay, look, it's probably best if you leave Sam and me out of this and let Natalya take point on this. Because my gut reaction is no harm, no foul, but clearly she did steal a sensitive piece of technology."

[Nick Varkan]

"I agree with that. It is a pretty big conflict of interest. And frankly it's whatever she intends to use it for that bothers me. Obviously it's nothing you and the headmistress would approve of."

[Nailah Weaver]

"I hope you're wrong. I also worry that you're not."

[Nick Varkan]

"I hope I'm wrong too," he answered.

[Nailah Weaver]

"I don't think she's one of the bad guys. Just keep that in mind, okay?"

[Nick Varkan]

"I will. I'm not in the habit of hurting people who didn't earn it."
