Riding the Clouds - Theresa's Blog

Postby Theresa McMasters » Wed Jul 17, 2013 11:21 am

Hi all. I know you're used to my ranting on here about when they nerf this ability or that ability or talking about strategies for downing various bosses and more specifically on warlock issues, but today I'm going to get a bit personal.

For those that don't know me personally, my name is Theresa McMasters and I'm a mutant. I attend Xavier's Institute outside of Maldon in the United Kingdom. I'm technically an American citizen, but I really don't have a country to go home to anymore. The reason I'm not at home, in the country where I was born, is that in order to be there, I would have to register with the government or face time in juvie (and maybe longer if I didn't register). You know, I always thought that 'refugee' was a designation that was for someone else. First world arrogance on my part maybe. Definitely not a problem you'd associate with the first world. And the reason that I'm a refugee? Because I don't want to register my existence merely because of genetics. Fill out forms to get my driver's license? I'm cool with that. Fill out forms because biology decided to do something weird with my genes? Seems a little out there.

Now, if you're following the news, you know that Senator Kinsey is due to visit the United Kingdom soon to speak about the wonders of his Mutant Registration Act. Well, I'm here to tell you that I'm one of the wonders of that Act: a girl who can't go home to visit her parents. I hope the lawmakers here can act on personal decency and not out of fear. Most of us just want to live our lives like everyone else. I like my new home. I don't want to have to leave again.

I'm guessing most of you who read my blog aren't mutants. That's cool. I'm guessing now that you know that I'm a mutant, some of you will stop reading. Some of you may even stop talking to me. That's your deal and if you're comfortable with that, then live your life and I'll live mine and we'll live and let live. But before you write it off as 'not your problem', I just wanted to stand up for myself and the others like me who can't go home. Hatred and fear are ugly things and when we let them control us, ugly things happen. It's true for everyone. Just something to think about.

Anyways, enough of philosophy, we now return you to your regularly scheduled posts of random crap.

Long time reader, first time commenter.

Beautifully written, and an amazing opportunity to use your platform to spread a very important message. Even if you aren't a mutant, you should care about mutant rights, because it's just the right thing to do, damnit.

Color me shocked that not only are you only in high school, but you also live on campus with me. I'm the tubby guy in nerdy shirts who yells.

Keep up the great work on your blogs and guides, and never feel shy about sharing more important messages like these as they come up.
