Meanwhile, on the campus...

[Narrator]

Sam's car sat inconspicuously in the staff lot, waiting for the next time that she came to drive it somewhere.

[Samantha McManus]

And indeed, at some point it seemed like a good idea for her. She could only fly so far, or use the Danger Room so many times, as she debated just how she was going to handle the memorial for the lost students. Certainly her discussions with Nailah had been... less than productive.

Driving meanwhile was sufficiently mundane. Thus it was that she hit the alarm system deactivation on her key fob as she approached the vehicle.

[Narrator]

And as she hit the alarm system button... nothing happened.

[Samantha McManus]

"Oh come on, don't tell me the bloody battery in the fob has died," she muttered, trying it again.

[Narrator]

Repeated pressing would produce no other results. Nor would attempts to unlock the doors, hit the panic button, pop the trunk... anything.

[Samantha McManus]

"...wonderful."

She cast her mind about for anyone nearby, as this seemed likely to be a prank.

[Narrator]

Aside from normal staff, who were going about their business in legitimate innocence, Sam wouldn't find anyone else around her. There was nothing amiss aside from her car not responding.

[Samantha McManus]

Shrugging, she decided to chance it and just open the door, turning the key in the lock.

[Narrator]

And as she turned her key in the lock, the lock opened as easily as ever, and the door opened without incident.

Also, it opened without any interior lights coming on.

[Samantha McManus]

"...that battery? Honestly?" She grumbled.

[Narrator]

The car, meanwhile, silently and powerlessly mocked her indignation.

[Samantha McManus]

Shaking her head, she pulled out her phone to call the maintenance crew about getting that checked.

[Narrator]

The maintenence worker, obviously overworked, sighed and asked her exactly what the problem was. Did she leave her lights on? Could she jump-start it?

[Samantha McManus]

"Nevermind," she snapped. "I'll call the bloody garage."

[Narrator]

"Do you think they're not going to ask you the same things, ma'am?"

[Samantha McManus]

"Just... don't start with me right now," she grumbled before hanging up.

"Didn't leave the bloody lights on, what kind of idiot does he take me for?" She muttered, going to hit the hood release under the dash.

[Narrator]

The hood popped for her to open, as normal. Once she opened it, however, things were a bit more clear.

Her battery was gone, and although there was no sign of the hood being forced open, there WAS sign of it rubbing against the body as it was pulled out. Various other parts were also clipped out and removed, mostly parts, in her inexpert opinion, pertaining to the electrical systems.

How this was accomplished with the hood closed and her car still locked were a mystery.

Letting out a litany of profanity that would make a sailor blush, she instead stalked back towards her office to fill out a security report.
