Ryan came in, buttoning up his shirt after his shower. "Oh, hey Nina," he said. "Did I hear the magic word 'waffles?'" he teased, giving Rachel a kiss on the cheek as he passed on his way to the kitchen, and giving Nina a one-armed hug as he passed her next.

"Oh, of course we have a waffle maker. Rock paper scissors for who cooks?" he said, opening the fridge and, remember at the last minute he wasn't alone, not drinking orange juice from the container.

"Unfortunately, there's no reliable way to test for a hybrid," Nina said, "They're just too rare. And since I'm a mutant that complicates things even further. I can't figure out if a genetic sequence is inherited from a human, mutated or because I'm part Atlantean."

Nina holds up a letter addressed to her.

"It's about my summer internship," Nina explains, "...I wanted someone to be around when I opened it. And I think you guys are just about the only friends I have left these days."

Ryan felt a little pang as she said this last part, and he set the mixing bowl down, turning to give Nina his full attention at this part. "Well? What are you waiting for? Let's see it!"

Nina grinned and took a deep breath. She tore the envelope open and pulled the letter out.

"I got in!" Nina said excitedly. She was practically glowing, she looked so happy, "I thought for sure they were going to reject me!"
