I7DT: Rooftop confessional

Postby Sean Hall » Sun Jul 17, 2011 9:15 pm

Sean stood on the roof of the dorm complex staring at the door waiting for the either one or both of the two friends he had at school to arrive...or to tell him to go pound sand.

Tala arrived, Ren and Aolani both in harnesses and on leashes.

"Gooooood evening, kind sir. Heard there was a party up here." She smiled and let both animals off their leads and they wandered around the roof.

"A very small one," Sean said, "More of a gathering really because there will be at most three of us up here, or five including Ren and Aolani."

"I'll let them know we're expecting someone else." She turned a moment from him then turned back and sat beside him.

"I figured you might have a secret, I was slow on picking up. Some things didn't add up. Jet lag." She smiled.

"It is a lie I've been telling for years now," Sean said looking up at the sky. "I'm starting to wonder if people were just humoring me all these years, just smiling and nodding. Pretending they believed every word I said about what I was."

"I can only say what I thought. I just arrived, my brain is a little sleepy, it wasn't until I saw the wolf that I remember the dragonfly and that while we were talking you said that you only had one power, not two. I figured you had a reason. I know I wasn't humoring you, because I just met you, I'm likely to honestly believe you if you told me you were actually blue and you were wearing a image inducer."

"I'm wishing it was that simple," Sean smiled. "But it isn't really."

"I'm..."

Just do it.

"I'm not a mutant. I am genetically at least completely normal."

"But you still have an ability most "normal" people don't, just not connected to your genetics." She watched him.

"At least not as far as I know," Sean said, "Though I've been using my powers since I can remember, and have been hiding it from others nearly as long."

Sean got to his feet and walked in front of Tala.

"I speak the true language of reality, bending it to my whim, channeling great energy as I see fit or what most people call magic. I am a Mage, Tala."

"Okay." She smiled.

"Now I know why Ren said you smelled like ozone. The residual magic or whatever, leaves a scent of a coming storm, gathering power and all that jazz."

"So, you sure no x-gene? Mutants have been around a long time, some of the things we can do could be called magic. Just saying, make sure you got all the bases covered."

She looked thoughtful for a moment, "You should talk to the staff, if you need guidance, if not then don't let it bother you. There is...someone...now if only I could remember. You're not the first and likely not the last."

"There are a few anonymous testing centers," Sean said, "I came back negative every time."

"Probably not the last," Sean smiled, "I'm still getting adjusted to the idea of people knowing, you are only the third person to know, so I'm notnsure if I'm ready to approach the staff or not. They might not approve of me being here."

"Well, they are equipped for mutants and x-gene based abilities, but they have contacts. I think all in all this would be the best place for you. I know, I would be sad to see you go."

"I say, if you need help tell them as soon as possible, if you have everything under control, then take your time, just don't take too long telling them. Some secrets are acceptable, but the longer you keep them from people who care about you, the riskier it gets. While the staff may not care for you like a friend would, they are responsible for your safety and well being, if your gift goes hay wire and they try to help you assuming you're mutant and it goes way bad, then it's your fault."

"True, just not used to trusting people even when they might help," Sean said, "So you're not going to jump the friend-ship? There might be more origami critters if you say you wont."

Sean smiled.

"Ooo I see what you did there, friend-Ship." She rolled her eyes but smiled.

"You're stuck with me, with or without paper critters. I can just counter yours with critters of my own and mine can leave presents."

She laughed, "I spent the first handful of years of my life in an alternate dimension. Besides, I told you I had heard of someone else who could too...and Morgan...the original Captain Britain's wife...some say she's actually Fae of some sort."

"Primitive, we stuck together, became our own clan or tribe. I was young, so it was more like a big rugged camping trip. From what I recall, the world was mutant ruled, but the mutants were separated. There was a city, that's where the human looking mutants were, then the jungle, that's where the ferals were, then there were...the dangerous ones, they were the Outcasts, we had to watch out for them."

Sean was quiet for a moment.

"Sounds like it must've been quite a shock to return to our universe," Sean said, "Though sometimes when you think about it things aren't that different here. We have mutants and humans in their own neighborhoods, and schools."

"I love indoor plumbing and season changes were hell for my mother." She grinned.

"It was partly why my brother and I lived at home until our freshman year at XI. It might also help explain why we are so close as a family, besides being ferals. Heck, I might still slip up and call some of the faculty here Uncle or Aunt."

"Indoor plumbing is overrated," Sean smirked. "You're lucky you have such a great circle of friends and family."

Sean paused for a moment smiling almost sadly.

"I don't think I could handle having a family member as a teacher."

"Hot running water is never overrated to a girl." She smiled.

"It wasn't so bad, Mom grew up pretty much the same way so she was able to teach us the basics. We could read and write and add and subtract by the time we came home. There wasn't huge pressure on us to get good grades, just to put in an honest effort. You can learn about just near anything once you know how to read."

"No pressure to excel in school, however; HUGE pressure to remain alive and in possession of all my parts. My parents are funny like that, can't blame them too much. I happen to like my parts right where they are as well."

"As I said, it'd take a very brave person to date me, break my heart and it's only a matter of who gets to you first." She grinned.

"I'm not sure how accurate Fantasy Fiction is, but I've read were magic is referred to as a sort of living energy, it does as it likes. You can't really make it do anything, just sort of nudge it along."

"Magic is...difficult to explain, Tala. It has always come natural to me almost like breathing, which makes it even more difficult," Sean said, "Like explaining color to a blind person, but in the end it is an energy source. You draw it from within, from the world around you or from beyond."

"Ren likes to tease Cloud, but so far all he's done is sulk and hid in his cave. I'm guessing he doesn't mind too much. He did have a little episode with a girl named Cassie..she poked him and he lashed out. Nothing serious. I can't really blame him, he wasn't expecting a poke between the eyes when he offered to let her pet him."
