Cal came into the server room in the middle of a quiet conversation with a little robot, carrying several portable high-capacity hard drives in his hand. He stopped when he entered the room and saw it so occupied, nonchalantly sliding the hardware into his backpack. "So... I take it I'm not the only one noticing that the network's screwing up?"

Cal turned his head and glared at Galatea, then looked back to the server. "Well, if Doug doesn't build enough security into his programs, I can't help it if mine are just that good," he sad casually.

HAL, you will give me an explanation and a goddamn diagnostic. NOW.

He stepped closer. "Its less a matter of what is appropriate than of perception and identity. Human beings you interact with will typically respond differently to a voice they identify as female than one they identify as male."

Cal, in the meantime, was looking over the results of the queries. "Well, it gets curiouser and curiouser. None of the oversight programs that I had active are responding. So who knows if it was Galatea or one of th- oh, will you be quiet, yes you caused trouble, now shut up and let me help sort it out," he said, cutting off to snap at the robot on his shoulder.

"That was the designation the AI came up with out of blue sky after we questioned it. I don't believe it has direct experience with any of your other creations. In fact, I was fairly surprised that it could produce a name."

There's no response while the program seems to be processing something. Whatever it is it seems to be eating up all it's resources for the time being.
