May 7th: Nina's Apartment

Postby The Golden Witch » Fri Dec 31, 2010 2:51 am

Nina steps out of her apartment, a bag slung over one shoulder.

With a small smile she started down the hallway. She had wasted far too much time already.

It was time to begin.

A short time after she was gone, smoke began curling out from underneath the door.

The smoke detectors woke Ryan up.

He was alone, thankfully, and thus could operate this part himself. It took him all of five minutes hurrying, throwing things from here and there into a duffel bag that he yanked out of his closet. Normally, he'd just go check on things, but... well, he could smell the smoke. He could feel the heat. And... actually, how did he know that the flat above him was empty? No time to think about that now.

He checked outside, to make sure he had the right window, then chucked the duffel bag through it and into the bushes across the sidewalk. Grabbing his keys on the way out, he hurried down the stairs.

Will woke up.

"Sara, do you hear that?"

If they didn't hear that, hopefully they'd hear the sudden 'fwoosh' sound, and then the urgent pounding at their front door.

The smoke trickling under his door would have tipped him off, probably. But Ryan pushed past him and shut the door quickly, coughing to clear his lungs as he did. He pointed up, then made a 'fwoosh!' expanding motion with his hands while he regained his breath.

Ryan shrugged. "Above ours," he rasped. "Nina's, I guess? Wasn't anyone up there, though."

"Is it burning? Like, really burning?" Sara ask as she hurries out of the bedroom in her pyjamas,a whining Robin in her arms. The smell of smoke kind of answers that question for her and she shifts to stone immediately.

"Yeah, looks like really burning," Ryan answered, his breath still raspy. "Window's the only way left for non-smoke-breathers."

"I'm not jumping out the window." she just says in a tone that leaves no room for discussion, even if it's mostly fueled by fear.

"I'm bringing Robin out." she goes on and already starts sinking into the floor.

"Don't think so," he coughed. "I think they'll get the hint from her if they are," he added, indicating Sara sinking through the other apartments. "But... No. Pretty sure we're the last."

Ryan nodded. "Focus on the top floors. It's worse up there, and I'm not fireproof. And can't turn fireproof."

"When we tell people what we did, we'll think of a more dignified way for him to get in there," Ryan muttered, running back through the apartment. Here goes nothing, he thought as, glowing brightly, he took a deep breath before hurrying out into the thick smoke.

Will flowed through the pipes, taking the paths he had memorized, down to the main system---and then, as Ryan was working his way up, he could hear the pipes around him CREAKING, CREAKING as they began to strain...

The smoke on the top floor was thick and the fire had gotten bad enough that the entire place was roasting hot. The fire was still contained to Nina's apartment but it wouldn't stay that way for much longer.

And then, all the pipes in and around Nina's room burst at once, and the faucets started gushing...

Ryan was, honestly, surprised to see that things hadn't spread much farther. His shirt was tied over his face as he used the fire extinguisher to keep things contained while Will worked his magic. Hopefully quickly.

Most of the water was just, well, gushing, unaimed.

...and then there was a ....whirring coming from the bathroom?

And suddenly, a SPRAY of water started bursting out, angled towards certain spots.

It couldn't get everything from the angle, but it WAS helping.

Things were going good as Will and Ryan worked together to fight the fire. The damage was severe but slowly dying down.

And that's when something exploded. Nails and other makeshift shrapnel sprayed throughout the apartment.

Ryan, not having any other real option at that point, jumped through the window at the end of the hall as the door exploded from its hinges.

The fire smoldered, just a shadow of the blazing inferno from short seconds ago. Thick black smoke spilled out down the hall.

Ryan feeling various stings in his side that told him yes, he did just jump through a big pane of glass, caught ahold of a light pole and, with a tug of his arm, got himself spinning around it to shed momentum as he slid down to the ground.

On the sidewalk firemen were starting to gather, ready to make an assault on the house.

A couple of emergency workers rushed to Ryan's side.

"Are you okay, sir?"

Will hoped that the still flowing water would take care of the rest of the fire, and stumbled down towards the stairs.

His skin was black and hardened, and he had nails and other makeshift shrapnel all sticking out everywhere.

Ryan was coughing and retching on the ground, getting the smoky gunk out of his throat. He looked like he might be nodding as he tried to speak. "Call... Xaviers," he rasped. "Might need... nonhumanoid specialists." Amidst this, he was letting them work on him. he had glass stuck in him in various places, but he knew enough to be positioned when he went through the window so that nothing vital could get perforated.

Seeing Will, a burly Englishman pulled the boy over his shoulder and carried him down the stairs signaling the emergency workers for help. Will was taken over to where Ryan was being worked on as the firefighters battled the blaze.

First aid wouldn't be a workin', as his skin was very hard and tough.
