Sept 20th - The Underground, Galleries, and more!

Postby Zoe Walker » Thu Apr 16, 2009 11:00 pm

After Monday's classes, Zoe heads out to the nearest tube station to the campus. She's wearing a riot of colours today, a rainbow-hued scarf in vivid, neon colours and matching arm-warmers, a deep purple jacket over a tye-dyed t-shirt, and a knee-length skirt in a deep green. She might be compensating for her height, but if she's trying to be noticeable, she's certainly succeeding. She kills some time texting on her cell phone as she waits.

As she's killing time, she receives an incoming text.

She smirks and shakes her head at the incoming text, expertly punching in a reply:

Indeed, never one to turn down a challenge, Zoe stops leaning on a "No Parking" sign pole and wraps her bare fingers around it. Her power spreads over the surface and drastically increases the friction over it's surface, allowing her to pull herself up a head and shoulders over the crowd. She's athletic enough to get there and wrap one leg around the pole to brace herself, holding on with one hand and using the other to dramatically shield her eyes from the sun.

"There's a first time for everything," she smirks. With a twist of her torso and a reversal of her power, she spins around the pole once as she slides back down to the ground. Her dismount is graceful but it's obvious her strength was strained to hold her weight up like that. "Glad you could make it. You're not on call either, yeah?"

"Well... there's a Rodin garden not too far from here that I'd love to check out while it's still daylight. If that's cool with you we can start there. Depending on how hungry we get we can eat after or shop after, but if we have time I'd like to do both." Since all roads lead through the underground, Zoe laces her arm into Calvin's and enters the station, paying when needed and leading the way to the right platform.

Cal smiled as they walked down into the Underground. Today's a good day. "Can't go disappointing the lady. Or the closest approximation currently on my arm," he joked. "The garden it is."

"Awesome!" It's a little hard to make conversation on the subway without yelling, and Zoe's not really in the mood for that, but the trip to the right station doesn't take long anyway. During the brief walk to the garden itself she pipes up again, "So can I seriously get some pictures from you for the garden? That'd totally rock, I love Rodin's work and this is the first time I've seen any of it in person."

"I'm going to hold you to that," she giggles then steers the way into the garden. There is a small admission fee, but it's pretty cheap for students. The woman behind the till gives the mutants a strange look when she sees what university their student cards are from, but she doesn't make a fuss about it.

Cal opened his eyes wide at the woman, making one 'pupil' contract completely shut and the other dilate until there wasn't any green visible. Granted, this meant that he completely missed the look on her face, since his eyes were out of focus. Still, he could hear the indignant sound the woman made as they walked on.

"Sorry. Couldn't resist," he chuckled as his eyes whirred back to normal.

"Hey now, I'm supposed to be the one freaking the mundanes. How is my carefully constructed outfit gonna make me the center of attention if you keep pulling stunts like that?" she grins to take any sting out of the teasing and starts moving along the paths. Depending on Calvin's taste, he's either surrounded by big lumps of metal or moving works of art.

"Oh? I thought I was part of the 'freak out the normies' outfit. Y'know, going all the way, brining the most eccentric and expensive camcorder you can find." Cal seemed to be zeroing in on all of the sculptures, studying each of them, his eyes focusing and refocusing as he zoomed and panned to take in all of the tiny details. Later, his visual processors would compress all of it into a streamlined video of the trip.

"Oooh, nice save. Okay, you're totally allowed to be freaky then," she permits with an indulgent tone of voice. She already knows a fair bit of Rodin's history, so she plays a bit of a tour guide as they walk around the sculptures. It doesn't really occur to her that Calvin could simply get online and pull up an encyclopedia entry, and besides, she does like the sound of her own voice. Once in a while she trails off, distracted by the impact of seeing the statues in person for the first time. "A lot of his work, including The Thinker, started off as sorta first-draft work on details he wanted to put into the Gates of Hell.." and she pauses again when they come up to a casting of the iconic Thinker.

Cal could, of course, look everything up. However, he usually didn't at times like these, for the simple fact that it was just less fun that way. He eyed The Thinker, taking it all in. "Where's the original? I remember that this isn't the original, but that's all I remember."

"I think the original is still in the Musee Rodin in Paris, but this one is the same scale as the it. Might hafta arrange a field trip to the continent for reading week or whatever, do something more interesting than Long Beach. I love the detail he managed to work into his sculpture, all the little nuances. It's nice to see a heroic conception in action, some of the more abstract movements have been pretty meh."

"I've seen some interesting kinetic sculptures that are abstract but still capture the eye. I've also seen blobs of clay thrown into the wall and allowed to roll off, which doesn't appeal to me quote so much."

"I'll say. I'm looking forward to getting into some of the ceramics stuff at the U, and I might just practice some more sketching too."

Zoe plays tour guide for another half hour or so as they check out the work available, but inevitably they wind up on the street again. "Kay, so, food or shopping first?"

"Yeah, I saw a store that I definitely want to pop into, looks like they carry my usual styles and other fun stuff to boot. Looked like there were some other potentials in the area, it's walk-able from here." She laces elbows with Cal and leads the way along the sidewalk, "Damn, I still catch myself looking the wrong way when I step off the curb. It's gonna take a while to get used to that flip. I dunno if I even want to drive here."

Cal took her arm, and mentally started plotting out eating places in the immediate area. "I never really thought about it," Cal admitted. "Is it really supposed to be that hard driving from the other side?" Granted, Cal had never driven a day in his life, but he wasn't about to mention that.

"In terms of dexterity? Naw, no harder. It's just all the learned reflexes, yeah? I mean, seriously, from the age of, like, three, we're told to look both ways before crossing, and we always look left first 'cuz that's the oncoming traffic lane. I nearly got hit once on a one-way street just 'cuz I was looking the wrong way, and that was back home. It's amazing how many little habits you pick up."

Cal smirked. "I just get collision alerts if I'm about to walk into the road when a car's coming. I get to miss out on all the fun little experiences like that. I feel sort of left out," he joked.

Cal chuckled, letting a spark of electricity arc in the hand of the arm he didn't have Zoe on. "Self powering. That would kind of suck to have to sit plugged into a wall at night. Love the tongue ring, by the way. It's you."

Zoe smacks her forehead with her free hand, "Right, duh, mutant power for the win. I'm really not an airhead, honest. And thanks! I like it too." Another block or two and Zoe veers into a funky clothing store. It seems to range from 'clubwear' to 'fetish' with a decent variety of choice, "Ahh, here we go. The first stop of our shopping excursion."

He eyed the store as they approached it. "I get the feeling this is going to be a fun shopping trip," he mused, holding the door for her.

"Leopard spot or tiger stripe?" she jokes then delves deeper into the store. "Hmm.. yeah, I thought I saw something appropriate. If that's the term. What do you think, blue or black?" She holds each outfit up, nibbling on her lower lip indecisively.

"Yah, I can always change the cut later." She puts the blue one back and drapes the black over her arm, "I'll try it on for size, but might as well peek around for other fun stuff. So, yeah, for you.. shirts, pants, matching ensemble?"

"I'm small enough I usually hafta do some custom tailoring anyway, so I'm used to it. 'Sides, off-the-rack is boring." She nibbles on her lip as she browses around, "Hmm.. synth or leather? More choices in synthetics, specially for budget reasons, but leather's nice."
