I7DT: A quarry

Postby Sean Hall » Sun Aug 07, 2011 1:15 am

Sean walked into the abandoned quarry wearing a new uniform he'd been working on for a while.

He stretched and then began using magic. It was several hours before he was done, but the abandoned quarry he'd been using looked like it had seen better days with a variety of broken/burnt/melted/frozen/impaled/cleanly cut stone debris spread around.

"Bloody hell, I'm out of shape," Sean said before chuckling to himself and walked towards his water bottle. He grabbed it and drank greedily. He took a seat next to his tent and watched the sun begin to set.

"Did the rocks do something wrong?" the voice asked behind him.

"That one over there insulted my mum," Sean said pointing at a particularly sorry looking rock.

"I didn't know rocks could speak in cockney rhyming slang until it did," Sean smiled. "No, not really. I bought this quarry so I could practice using my abilities."

"I own it," Sean said, "I bought it at an auction. Told my parents it was an investment, not that they would have notice the money being taken out of my account."

Sean chuckled.

Good thing I planned ahead and brought a second sleeping bag

"I'm sure the BBC and I can come to some sort of agreement," Sean smiled. "Didn't know you were a Dr. Who fan."

Sean pulled two bottles of water out of his cooler and offered on to Altamira. Apparently he really had planned ahead for this somehow. Sean's little camp site even had a fire pit ready to go.

"Next you'll tell me you like Monty Python," Sean smiled.

"I honestly haven't seen much of it," she said, taking one of the bottles.

Sean blushed slightly and stood up to needlessly adjust the arrangement of the logs in the fire pit before lighting them without using matches.

"More than enough for me," Sean smiled. "I was mostly just curious. Never had somebody drop by to see me all the way out here. Though I suppose the bit about distance doesn't really matter much to the source of all life."

Once Sean was fairly certain the fire wasn't going to die he went and grabbed a blanket that he then laid out on the ground and gestured for Mira to join him by the fire.

"I also came out here to escape a bit. I'm still not entirely used to these crisis situations that the school seems to have some sort of monopoly on," Sean said, "Not really sure what to do with myself during them or afterward."

"I was also hoping you'd stop by despite the cosmically insignificant distance."

"It's hard," she agreed. "I find myself wanting to swoop in, save the day.

I wasn't going to let you mope out here by yourself."

"I do appreciate having the company of a wonderful and beautiful person," Sean smiled. "How do you keep yourself from swooping in? I was just about ready to go running to my car before racing all the way to the stadium. Not that me blowing up half the stadium would be particularly useful mind you."

"That makes sense," Sean said, "Can't have the Phoenix jumping into every local squabble or soon we'll be relying on to do everything for us. Just like I can't rely on magic to solve all of my problems though it certainly is tempting."

The sun had completely set by now.

"I'm starting to think the Phoenix is teaching you how to be intentionally mysterious."

"Here we are talking about serious things under the stars," Sean smiled. "People are going to start to think we're no fun at all."

"But I know a secret," Sean said then began to whisper, "That the goddess Altamira does actually let her hair down from time-to-time. She even likes to dance, go spelunking, and camp outside with mages in more or less abandoned quarries."

Sean chuckled.

"Next thing you know he'll just buy the whole restaurant before taking you to it," Sean smiled. "And then the club before going there to dance, then he'll end up owning the entirety of London all for her."

"Sometimes I fill an entire pool with it just so I can swim in gold," Sean dead panned before he was quiet for a moment or two. "No I really don't. My parents are pretty successful. They give me money, that I almost never spend even though they say I can buy whatever I want. Most of it collects interest, the rest is invested."

"So I'm wealthy, but by no means am I Warren Buffett."

"All that money and power is pretty meaningless if you don't use it to help others," Sean said staring at the sky. "Though I suppose buying a quarry doesn't really anybody but me. Except to prevent the whole accidentally blowing something important up while trying to practice."

"You aren't the only one," Sean said, "If I say the wrong word or channel too much power into even a simple spell... Though I imagine your problems are a bit more large scale than mine."

"It's something everybody with power should worry about. It's what makes you more worthy of the power you have, that concern for the well-being of those around you."
