Issue 1 Downtime

Sean was standing on the quad among the few trees on campus his backpack resting nearby. What looked like tattoos glowed on his hands as wisps of light danced in and around it.

There was a circling of birds overhead, before they spiraled down behind a nearby tree. On the other side, a woman in what looked to be a black dress stepped out.

"Hnn. I can... feel that," she said, sounding a bit perplexed that she could.

Sean looked at McManus like she was some sort of exotic animal.

"Ruvaak Jul," Sean said looking a bit perplexed his words carrying more power than was normal.

She winced, disoriented.

"...please don't do that."

"Now that is... very queer," Sean said sounding rather surprised at the reaction.

"From this?" Sean asked looking at the wisps. "This is minor magic, and even using the language only carries little power without actually focusing on it."

"Then I suppose I'm a little unused to it," she said with some uncertainty.

Sean dismissed the wisps with a slight move of one hand.

"I doubt there are many people who are used to it," Sean said, "Fewer who look disoriented by it."

"There's just... a tugging, I suppose."

"Magic courses through everything," Sean said, "But a tugging?"

She frowned.

"I don't think I quite have words for it. Not yet."

Sean frowned as well.

"Defining magic is often like grasping at mist," Sean said, "Usually one half expects this kind of conversation to happen in a musty room with stormy skies."

"I'm... I'm sorry. I've gone about all this backwards. I'm almost accusing you, and I haven't even caught your name yet."

"There weren't any torches or pitchforks, so I figured I was safe for the moment," Sean said, "Sean Hall. That's my name I mean."

"The one people say is a goddess?" Sean asked cocking an eyebrow.

"Let's just say that people say it enough," Sean said, "They also say you just came back with the teams from that parallel universe."

"I don't think I can criticize the decision making of our headmistress," Sean said, "If the reason was good enough for you then I don't doubt it's good enough for the rest of us."

"Maybe not, but I hardly know you outside of your time in the limelight," Sean said, "And it's very strange seeing childhood heroes in the flesh."

"Well now, that's something that always sounds a bit surreal to me. Then again, I suppose it seems like ages since I was an Avenger."

"Seems like ages since I played with action figures and watched the evening news," Sean said, "A human mage doesn't really have many people to look up to."

"Doctor Strange..." Sean said, "Like looking up to the Phoenix as a budding telepath. He's also much better at staying out of the public eye than the Avengers or the X-Men."

"I didn't look up to the Phoenix per se, but for the life of me I wanted to be Jean Grey."

"Whereas I certainly do not want to be Sorcerer Supreme or Doctor Strange," Sean smiled. "Why did you want to be Jean Grey?"

"If I'm honest, I'd say it's because I really didn't understand what that entailed, but more shallowly because I somewhat entertained the notion that I could look like her, and that it could be me up there."

"I've learned over the years that super powers only really leads to strange personal developments," Sean said, "Mine found me dating the Phoenix, attending school here, and fighting Doctor Doom."
