ASHLIE is sitting in the dining hall after going through the line without actually getting any food. She's just sitting at one of the tables, observing others around her.

John walked by with a tray of food, and stopped.

Was that another robot?

He doubled back.

I hope it isn't Cal's.

Nah. Not sneaky enough.

"Do you... mind if I sit here?"

"Why would I? I am not expecting company."

"My name is John, and you would be?" he asked politely as he sat.

"I am ASHLIE, main unit 001."

"It's pleasure to meet you," he grinned as part of a greater 'ooh neat' expression.

"Why does everyone keep saying that when they only just met me? You are lacking the information to determine with any reliability if it is indeed a pleasure."

"Sorry. I'm just used to empty pleasantries."

"Although to be honest? It is a pleasure. I think robots are neat," he smiled.

"I've been toying with electronics since I was a kid. I just find them fascinating. I can't really express why."

"Robotics are a means to an end, but electronics are second nature to me." it says, almost sounding a bit proud.

"Being able to process data as fast as you likely can, I'm not surprised."

"Though I suppose technically it would be first nature but there is no matching colloquialism."

"Oh good, it was not just my conversational sub-routines failing."

"I am learning." Yep, definitely proud now.

"Is that your primary function?" he asked curiously.

"Of course. Yours isn't?"

"While I do enjoy it, I can't say I have a primary function. We fleshy ones don't often work that way."

"Doesn't every experience translate into learning?"

"True enough I suppose, but it's hardly an end in and of itself."

"It's what gets done with that knowledge that ultimately matters."

"It could be to advance technology, to heal the sick, to entertain, to protect others, or a lot of things... and then there are the more selfish pursuits like power and profit are when they are the only goal."

"And what to you plan to use your knowledge for?"

Re: I8DT - Meatbag Rituals

"To advance technology and hopefully protect others when I can, though I do hope to make money doing the former."

"Does that make it selfish?"

"Well you can't run a business without money."

It seems to consider that for a moment.

"That is not really an answer to my question."

"Perhaps a little selfish," he answered, unsure, "I have to admit it's a gray area."

"That is a very unsatisfying answer."

Not that ASHLIE would get it.

"Thank you. I tried to work with the original designs instead of starting from scratch."
