John, in jeans and a red plaid shirt, was sitting in a chair by a coffee table caaaaaaaaaaaaaarefully folding an origami dragonfly.

Rip.

"Damnit!" he cursed, throwing it into the trash alongside countless other ruined paper animals before starting another.

Sean was walking through the common room in a bit of a daze when he noticed John's attempts at origami.

"Mind if I join you?" Sean asked.

The distraction caused him to poke a claw through it.

"Shit..."

Perhaps doing this in a public space was a bad idea.

Sean sat down anyways and took a piece of paper.

"I'd slow down a bit," Sean said as he folded a crane in slow practice motions.

"Believe or not I used to be good at this," he said as he started another.

Sean finished the crane and began folding something a bit more complicated.

"I started when I was a little kid," Sean said, "Folding things always made me feel better, and then as I got older it was soothing almost meditative."

Sean's paper began to take shape looking more and more like a dragon with each passing moment.

"I started because my power tutor recommended it. It worked wonders for my fine motor skills after my strength increased."

"I can imagine that kind of thing is a bit hard to adjust to," Sean said finishing up the dragon and whispering to it.

He raised a scaly brow at the whispering.

"You must really like origami."

The dragon began to move jerkily at first and then more smoothly. It roared silently as Sean leaned back from it.

"Sometimes the paper it speaks to me," Sean chuckled.

"How did you..." he blinked, "...right, magic."

The dragon actually flew (a fairly short distance) and landed on John's shoulder.

"Right," Sean said, "Fairly minor spell I developed when I was a kid and was lonely with my parents always gone on business."

"I know what that can be like," he nodded, curiously holding a finger out at the critter.

The dragon's mouth latched onto John's finger, though it didn't really have teeth, so it wouldn't hurt.

"Was always glad I had magic to distract me from the empty house," Sean said, "You parents were always traveling too?"

"Mine both worked for the same company, so one or the other was usually gone on some business trip or too busy at the lab to come home," Sean said, "Always struck me as a little strange that they wanted to adopt a kid but didn't really have time for one."

"They worked for a defense contractor here in England," Sean said, "Selling and developing weapons for the British military mostly."

"And my father worked for an electronics company."

One that murdered him.

The thought soured his expression.
