Issue 1 Downtime

With the help of Stephanie and some nice faculty members, Rose was now an actual member of the school. She had a uniform and a room and everything. And they even gave her a meal ticket, which she understood was a magical card that allowed you to eat anytime you wanted.

It was pretty awesome.

Rose sat at one of the tables, tale twitching happily as she ate a late lunch. Or early dinner. One of the two.

Jennifer was dressed in her usual grubby clothes, having just come from working on an art project which had taken her longer than she expected. She gathered up her food quickly and stopped when she saw the squirrel sitting at one of the tables. Walking over, she asked politely, "Mind if I sit here?"

"Some days are better than others, but over all it looks like a 'good food' day," she said after sitting down and taking a bite.

"What's a 'bad food' day?" Rose asks, looking concerned, "Do they drug the food? 'Cause that's not fun."

"No, just food that doesn't taste good. It's rare, but it happens sometimes. Of course, it may be that you just don't like the taste."

Rose struggles with this idea for a moment and completely fails. Shrugging it off as some weird cultural thing.

"So are you a student here too? I wasn't for awhile but then they found me living here and they're all 'you should live here all the time' and I was all like 'kay' and now I get to stay here forever and ever."

Jennifer blinked for a moment at the question, "You know, I've never really thought about it. I mean, the simplest answer would be because I have the X-gene, but I suppose that's not a particularly satisfying answer."

Rose nods, "It's really not, is it?"

"The average mutation frequency of a human genome was ~2.5×10−8 per base per generation," Rose recites, "Mutants should be much rarer then they are."

"Which brings up the possibility of a precipitating event or some action of some sort," Jennifer said thoughtfully as she munched on her food.

"Allegedly," Jennifer said. "Or it could have been something that fell out of the sky from space. Or maybe we're just lucky."

"Want some cake?" Rose asks, offering her a plate.
