Late night, Apr. 28 - Divining by firelight

Postby Daniel Uriel » Thu Dec 09, 2010 4:58 pm

((open thread))

It had been a weird day. Daniel wasn't quite sure what it was about the powers ht And this was why, late at night in the far edges of a quad, a bonfire had blossomed. It started normally, but didn't seem to be consuming the wood Daniel had gathered, and neither did it seem to be burning any of the trees nearby. Daniel sat at it, seemingly staring at figures dancing within the flames.

On a closer look, there were figures in the flames. At first they flickered and wavered like the firelight they were, then they took on a more distinct shape, detailed figures within the flames. Funny, he thought as he looked, I thought it'd feel more significant to see their faces.

The figures in the fire vanished, like consumed by the wild flames surrounding them as Daniel glanced coolly back over his shoulder. "No."

"Good." Rachel said lightly "I've got a hot date tonight, and I'd hate to have to cancel because I need to put out a fire."

"Good. Wouldn't want to keep Feathers waiting," he said, rolling his eyes and focusing on the fire, waiting for her to get lost.

"It's fire."

He smirked a little, then glanced back. "Sticking with the one that'll stick with you, eh?" he chuckled.

Daniel shrugged. "A lot of not-so-subtle-as-she-thought 'I don't like you, watch what you're doing," he said, shrugging as he looked back at the fire.

"The wood'll still be good," Daniel said with a shrug, nodding to the wood which, as mentioned, wasn't being consumed.

"Why would it be? Is it dangerous when you go all pink and feathery?" he asked, shrugging.

In the fire, figures started to dance and take form again.

Daniel shrugged. "There's your answer, then, I guess," he admitted. And in truth, he knew that it could be dangerous, but he wasn't worried for some reason.

In the fire, the figures took shape, and he knew that this time, he wasn't looking into his own past, even before the images from Chloe's past started solidifying.

"Combining powers," he said, his voice a little distant as he let the power work. "Never turn out... exactly like what I copied. And combining them makes them even more different. Time in flame... flames of creation, flames of destruction... not much destruction trailing behind you. Not... much creation, either, but some." He stopped for a moment, almost considering. "Probably more fortunate than not, there."

"I'm not sure myself," Daniel said, watching the dancing flames. "It's... like that feeling, where you know something makes sense, and that you might even understand it, but you can't quite explain it just yet."

"But the flames... are reading your past. They seek times of creation and destruction... great beginnings and great endings. Passion. Times of flame. Can't... pull out, or... I'll lose it again," he said, concentrating on the flames as they remained tightened into the gazing of the past.

The images pressed on a bit longer, until Daniel let out a tired breath and the flame snapped back to being a normal fire. "Damn, that feels wierd," he muttered, rubbing his temples.

"It's better that way," he said, glancing at her. "It's always better when you kill something if it's like that, when you have to do it, and have to do it fast."

"New perspectives aren't always good, after all."
