Zeryn gazed up at the moon. The water was only knee-deep, but he sat in it, reclining back so that it washed over his body. It was, he'd learned, a rather peaceful way to pass a solitary evening.

As for the first part, I love my family, who tried to save me, at great risk, even as your family did.
