Voluntary experiments

The site of the recently restored Braddock Lighthouse. Aircraft hangars and other X-Men facilities, including a Cerebra unit and the Danger Room have been constructed around the foundations of the lighthouse.

Voluntary experiments

He'd put it off for a while, but Daniel finally headed down to the labs. Might as well admit it when I've screwed up, he thought as he knocked.

The door opened, and a third year lab assistant with mousey hair and thick glasses looked out.

"Yes?"

She adjusted her glasses.

"Oh sure.. C'mon in, and don't touch anything."

Daniel was brought through and led to Stan's desk. Stan looked up, and bade him to sit in the provided chair.

"Hello, mr. Uriel. It's been a while."

"It started off with just some fluctuations in level," he said. "Figured I just wasn't used to the powers I picked up. It happens sometimes. Except I dropped those powers. That's when stuff started getting weird."

"Unreliable, for one thing. The constants are always the same... I can fly, I can generate a little flame no matter what. But there are crazy speed bursts sometimes. Other times, it's hard to keep airborn. And whatever powers I take, sometimes other stuff pops up. Nothing I've come into contact with, not in a while, at least."

Stan nodded.

"Have you had any incidents that have happened recently? Any new stresses in your life? Are you sleeping well, eating a good diet, etcetera?" He asked, drawing a matrix to track his line of questioning.

"Yeah. Last week. I was guarding a convoy sneaking into Canada and I just mad a Sentinel... I dunno, implode?" He shrugged. "Kyra swears I must have just grabbed her power without knowing it, but it doesn't work like that. I mean, it isn't a little easy-to-miss thing when I sync with someone. I didn't have any power set that should let me do that, but I did it anyway."

"And I've been taking care of myself as well as I ever have. This was never a problem until I was up in space. I figure I must have gotten bit by a Shi'ar flea or something."

"Ah, one of those kind of students. No problem."

He smirked, leading Daniel over to an analysis machine familiar to many other students.

"Ok, lie down. We are going to map your x-gene completely, so I can get a good base to work with. I have a couple of other mutant profiles we can compare it to."

"It means that I am going to run a microsensor beam over you, detecting both your own unique sequence on the x-gene, as well as the resultant physical and neural modifications that are a result of it. It's basically me taking an extended physical of your mutant capabilities."

Stan turned on the system, and a robotic arm powered up, methodically running a yellow beam over Daniel's prone form.

As it proceeded, a 3D model of Daniel's body and x-gene began generating on a holographic display overhead, and a scrolling data feed displayed the scan results.

"Ok, just sit still. This will are a while, but if you have any concerns, we can discuss them as the routine proceeds."

"There's no knives and electric shocks yet, so I'm good," Daniel said.

According to Stan's scan, Daniel's X-Gene was tied to his personal bio-energy field. There were, of course, other changes that could happen to his body, but his X-Gene's function was to activate his bio-energy field so that it could make these changes possible.

There were some similarities in Daniel's power to just about every fire mutant Stan had on file. Not surprisingly, there was also a strong corellation between Daniel's powers and Rogue's, though there were marked differences as well.

Daniel's own scans would be on file from when he was locked up the last year. Compared to that baseline, there were drastic differences in his bio-energy now.

"Well, there are marked differences to your bio-field, that have occurred since you spent some time in the detention facility last year. I've seen this sort of change before, but usually it involves a strain of the legacy virus.. And the pathogen detectors would have picked up on that immediately."

"That depends on how exotic the space flu was.. But I can run a more thorough scan for microorganisms now."

Stan did so, as a soft red light sweeped over Daniel's body.

The scan would come up negative, no matter how minute the search. Moreover, Daniel seemed to be in remarkably better health than someone who'd been roughing it for months should be.

He looked back at the previous readings, curious.

"Tried to see what Nova force was all about, that wasn't all that enlightening. Then there was a Power Skrull... then those weird magic priests or whatever they were... it was a busy time, ok?"
