Issue 1 Downtime

Miranda had decided to walk down to Maldon, giving her alone time to clear her head and not have to deal with the press of other people and the possibilities they presented. That ended by the time she got to Maldon, but she was prepared for it and feeling a little better. She wandered down the High Street, watching the shops and ignoring the people who occasionally stared at the "blind girl" walking without a cane or guide dog.

While most people are staring (or specifically avoiding to stare) a young woman about Miranda's age with blue-ish hair seems to smile at her from across the street and giving her a wave, followed by sticking her tongue out at Miranda. It's very possible she's trying to test whether Miranda notices by trying to provoke a reaction.

Miranda stopped, turning to 'look' across the street at the blue-haired girl.She tilted her head as if she was trying to figure out what the girl wanted or why the girl was making faces at her.

"I knew it!" she says loud enough that Miranda can hear it. She runs out into the street, dodging one car and making another honk at her. "You can totally see me, can't you?" she asks once she's on the other side.

"I can see lots of things. You just happen to be one of them," Miranda says, obviously a little surprised by the reaction.

"Yeah but it's... It's not with your eyes, is it." she says, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper.

"Thanks! I was trying for blonde but I messed it up, so I went at it with blue to cover it up and this is the result!" she laughs.

"I was just gonna do some window shopping, maybe hit the Goodwill store and head over to Madison's later. You know, the Bowling alley and stuff. They got some arcades there too. It's a pretty good hangout spot, no adults bugging you."

"Groovy. Come on then, Goodwill's down the road and Tuesdays are when they cart out the new stuff!" she says, pulling Miranda along by her sleeve. Zephyr's clothes look like they majorly came from that store or other second-hand places. She doesn't quite look homeless but she doesn't seem to be exactly well off.

"Yup! Well, out on the road to Great Totham. Lemme tell you, it ain't so great!" she laughs. "Maldon's closer though and there's more stuff happening here anyway."

Miranda seemed to be confused by the joke, "I wouldn't consider sheep to be particularly exciting either."

For a moment she looks at Miranda, confused that she wouldn't get it. "Nevermind. Just a dumb joke." she finally waves it off. "Ah, there we are." she says, as they arrive at the Salvation Army thrift store and heads inside. It's nothing special but it has that strange flea market appeal of looking like there could be cool stuff hiding among all the stuff, just waiting to be dug out.

"Not unless you catch them wheeling in the rack with the new stuff before they sort them in. I need some new pants, but we can just browse around some. Oh! Always check the purses for stuff left in them. Found 20 quid in one once."

"You'd think they'd go through those before they put them out," she said, starting to poke around the racks.

"They do, but sometimes they miss stuff. And then there's the other kind of treasure!" she adds as she spots something. Rummaging through a bin of stuff she pulls out a sunhat with the pattern of a pizza printed on it. "Look at this magnificent thing!" she laughs and puts it on Miranda's head.

"It's certainly a thing," Miranda said, taking the hat off and looking at it in a completely unnecessary series of gestures.

"Pff, no appreciation for haute couture." she says with a vaguely French affectation and completely wrong pronunciation. "It would go wonderfully with this leopard print scarf." she says, picking up the item in question and throwing it around her neck and over her shoulder with her nose held high. "Tress shick."
