Mars got off the bus with Theresa. looking excited. She always had enjoyed exploring new towns and was equally happy to be making a friend her own age for once.

"So, how'd you get to Xavier''s?" Mars asks Theresa.

"Was originally going to attend until they moved. Then got busted because of the MRA and made a deal to get sent here instead of to jail," she said with a shrug.

"That sucks," Mars says, "But I guess it's better than jail."

"Yeah, I definitely prefer being here. Goodness knows what being a mutant would have been like in jail."

"Probably not a whole lot different than the Raft or places like that," Mars says, "Heavy security, power nullifiers, the works."

"There are days when I think a power nullifier might not be so bad," she chuckled. "Here we are. One of the better coffee shops that still allow high schoolers."

"Thank god," Mars says, moving towards the counter, "Want anything? My way of thanking you for showing me around."

"I'll take a water. Nothing fancy."

Mars orders herself a caffè and gets Theresa a water, paying with a few crumpled bills from a wad of cash she pulls out of her jacket.

"Here you are," Mars says, handing Theresa the water.

"Thanks," Theresa said, having found them a table. "So what do you think of your first few days at school?"

"Terrifying," Mars says, "I'd never been to a real school before. Plus, being on my own? Without any of my family around? I keep feeling like I need to bolt."

"Home schooled then? My parents did that for a little bit after my abilities first showed up."

"I'm from southern Alabama. Not exactly the most tolerant place in the world. They were worried someone might try to beat me up or something."

"I'm sorry," Mars says, "That sounds pretty awful."

"With me, it was just that we moved around too much to really make it worth going to school. 'Course, my parents were also a couple of idiots so it was all sorts of pear-shaped."

"And that's why I can't read," Mars says, obviously joking. She can easily read at a fifth grade level.

Theresa just stared at her for a moment until her brain processed the tone. "Oh, ha ha," she said. "Well, if you ever want help with the math or science stuff, let me know. I'm not so great on the English class stuff."

"That would be amazing," Mars says, looking relieved, "I'm fine with the basic stuff but when they start asking you to do the seriously weird stuff like fractions I get all sorts of mixed up."

"If you have problems with the math sometimes, you could also talk to Professor Miller. She's been pretty helpful a couple of times that I had questions."

"Her classes are fun. Professor Sackville's class can be fun, but can be a bit strange at times. Professor Weaver... well... I'll just say don't think about getting out of line in her class. She always seems to see it coming. The headmistress seems kind of nice, but I haven't actually talked to her a lot."

"The big one is Regan, the ghost girl. Pretty much hates everyone and everything. Most of the other students okay, although I personally think Christie Bowen's a bit of a bitch. Blonde hair, kind of skinny. Cal and Haley, Cal has the robot arm, Haley's the snotty little blonde who's always on her phone, they're a couple and a piece of work. They really have it in for Kay for some reason."

"Weird is the new normal," Theresa said with a shrug. "Although, the bulk of it is the same old high school crap, just now with added mutant powers."

"Well, mutant stuff, yeah, but ghosts? Robot arms?" Mars says, "I mean, we're a few witches and a werewolf away from a Saturday morning cartoon show."

"Ms. Kaltiera from Power Control? Total werewolf. And there's rumors that some of the professors and college students get up to magical hijinks after dark. The kind of rites and stuff that involve dancing under the moon and stuff."

Crap.

"I meant...just...all the rumors and gossiping," Mars says, unconvincingly, "You know. That sort of bullshit."

Technically true. A circus full of super-criminals DOES gossip a lot.

She sipped at her water. "Okay, I know a thing or two about bad conversation shifts and that wasn't a particularly good one, Mars. But if you don't want to talk about it, that's cool. Goodness knows I have crap I don't want to talk about."

Mars sighs, looking down into her coffee cup, "No, I'm sorry. I'm being a jerk."

"I don't know how I'm going to make friends if I just plan on lying to them all the time."
