Common Room: Who's afraid of a big bad wolf?

Vertie sat in the middle of a couch, her eyes closed in concentration. She was "feeling" for Jennifer's "new" "off" wolf. She knew and she wasn't going to sit by and let anyone else turn or worse get killed.

Stephanie walked into the common room wearing a training uniform and carrying a tablet she often had during power control.

"Hi Vertie," she smiled. "Just the girl I was looking for."

She opened her eyes and pulled her focus back, knowing Stephanie and not wanting to "touch" the older girl's wolf without permission. "Hmm, yeah?"

"Just haven't had a chance to talk with you one on one yet," she smiled. "I like to do that with all my students. Especially though, with people with similar "snarly" tendencies like your brother, or like you who...get...us wild types. You have a few minutes?"

"I guess." She moved over to one side of the couch. She figured if there was snarling and roaring from upstairs she'd hear it just fine where she was anyway.

"Mind going for a walk? I get a little bit...antsy stuck inside this time of the month," she smiled her eyes golden. "It's silly I know, but I have to indulge my wild side sometimes."

"I would actually prefer to stay right here. I'm waiting...for someone." She said as she tucked her legs up on to the couch and hugged her knees.

"Boys are afraid of my brother." She lightly picked at the frayed hem of her jeans. "I'm actually hoping this person doesn't show."

"It can be difficult dating a feral or someone with feral family," she smiled, taking a seat next to Vertie.

"Who are you hoping doesn't show up though?"

"I can't say, unless they come, then you and everyone will know."

"Well that's awfully cryptic. Is everything okay?"

"With me? Yes. In general, more or less. Could that change in an instant, yup. So, what did you want to talk about?"

"Well now that you've brought this up, I'm a bit more concerned about what's worrying you and might change any minute."

"I made a promise and now I'm waiting to see if it was the right thing to do or not."

Steph regarded her seriously, "Details, please. You're worrying me here."

Vertie shook her head. "You ever get into something deep and you know the right thing to do, but it sucks and everyone else involved knows but doesn't want to do that right thing, so you promise to not do that thing and now you just have to sit and wait for hell to break loose or not."

Steph's face hardened a bit. "Yes. And giving me a straight answer would be one of those right things to do. Not a fan of hell breaking loose."

She opened herself again, her power softly moved over Stephanie's wolf, like slipping into a warm bath. Silently she counted "off" wolves and sighed. "It's happened. Murphy bit Brigid and Brigid bit Jennifer. There's now three werewolves upstairs."

Steph nodded. "I know about what happened." she said softly.

"Do you think you'd be interested in helping me help the girls?" she added after some consideration.

Stephanie got "cold shower" as Vertie suddenly pulled her power back. "What?" She took a breath and calmed herself. "Not cool." She muttered. "How do you want me to help?"

Steph grimaced a bit at the sensation. "Well. You have a rather special set of skills that are useful for ferals..." she began.

"And to stop any more accidents like just happened, it might be helpful if the girls had someone they could go to if they felt like their wild side might be coming out to play."

Vertie thought for a long moment. "I'll help, but I'm not going to be their crutch. They have to...be willing to learn. To find balance and they have to be willing to...do whatever it takes, to keep people safe. No one else gets bitten and no one gets eaten."

"Well that goes without saying. You know me in class--I hate shortcuts with power control. This is simply an added...precaution. Can I trust you to help?"

"I don't like it, but I'll do it." She said and stretched out her legs. "I can handle three wolves."

"I'll handle all of the official things, but I really appreciate your help," she smiled. "This will be good practice for you as well. Consider your homework for power control handled for the rest of the semester as long as you keep me in the loop."

She paused a moment, "and please, until you hear otherwise, please do keep this between us and the girls. It's a sensitive topic."

"I have a feeling my opinion of "other wise" may be very different from yours, but so long as no one else is bitten and no one dies, I'll keep the "W" word under wraps. That I promise."

"You don't seem to have much faith in your power control teacher, Vertie. I'm not incompetent I promise,"

"Oh, I don't think you're incompetent, but I can feel your wolf and you tricked me. I have my reasons and you have yours."

Steph raised her eyebrow at Vertie.

"Not sure I follow why you think I'm tricking you about anything..."

"You already knew. You allowed me to believe that you didn't, but you did. If you already knew then you already knew that I was there and that I promised. It might not have been an all out "trick", but it wasn't fully "right" either."

"Brigid isn't exactly in the greatest headspace right now, so I wanted to be completely certain that you knew exactly what happened without feeding the rumor mill if you didn't. I apologize if it seems I was trying to keep anything from you."

"You want me to help, I have to be able to trust you too. You want to be kept in the loop, then I need to be kept in too."

"Oh? How many are in Murphy's pack?" Vertie tilted her head appraising, not Stephanie, but something about a foot above her head.

Steph looked towards where Vertie was looking. "Well. Murphy, Theresa, Brigid makes three. Four if you count me. I'm a bit different, but simply having some of the same senses and experiences can sort of being you together."

"So there are three, just not Jennifer, yet." She looked back at Stephanie. "And four with you...I'll need to meet everyone's wolves properly, under safe conditions, but that should be it."

"Well. It's not a mandatory membership. Jennifer only needs to be part of the group of she wants. Like I said it's just nice having some shared experiences. And I'm sure we can arrange that kind of meeting. Haven't you already met my wolf in class?"

"A wolf without a pack dies. If she changes she'll learn she needs one." She crossed her legs under her. "Not personally. Not one on one. She doesn't see me as an individual, just another pup to keep out of trouble and protect. I need to show her and them I can be a useful full member of the pack. That I can be trusted and depended on. Not all members are big and flashy, but all are important."

Steph nodded, "That's a good point. Well we'll be here for her."

She turned to face Vertie more fully, "And go ahead...meet my other half," she smiled softly, her piercing golden eyes regarding the young empath.
