Issue 1 Downtime

The morning after the incident involving Brigid's abs there's a piece of paper tacked to the pinboard on the inside of their door. Kay is still asleep but she must have put it up the night before so Haley would find it when she got up at an ungodly hour again. It says "Sorry for being such a butt." and underneath that is a cartoon drawing of Kay with a butt for a head and an arrow pointing at it labelled "Me". Next to it is a cartoon drawing of Haley in superhero garb, including cape, striking a mid-air pose.

Haley woke up grumbling at her alarm clock at "fuck you" in the morning to get ready for her run. She brushed her teeth, changed into some running clothes, and was putting her hair up into a ponytail when she noticed the new drawing on the board. She approached it curiously and a smile spread across her face.

"Oh em gee, that is awesome," she murmured to herself, trying not to wake up Kay.

She took the drawing off the door, moved it over to the pin board over her own desk, and hung it proudly near several shirtless country-western singers' photos.

She crossed back to the pin board on the door and uncapped the dry erase marker to leave a message for Kay.

By the time Haley gets back from her run Kay is actually up herself, mostly done with her morning routine and packing her schoolbag.

Haley is red-faced and still sweating. The old guy could run.

"Hi roomie," she smiled. "Thank you...I really, really like that drawing."

"Hey..." she says a bit awkwardly. "Glad you did. I realized I was kind of mean the other day. So.. sorry." she smiles apologetically.

"I...it's okay. I was really shitty to you last year. And I deserve it. I just...hate having everyone hate me."

"Yeah, I know what that's like from back home. It sucks..."

"So like...I dunno. I just wanna get along with more people this year, and especially you because you have the easiest reach to smother me in my sleep," she smiled teasingly.

"I'd totally do it too." she nods, chuckling.

"See?" she giggled.

"So...I meant what I said--we should like. All go out and help Brigid shop. I dunno what came over her, but...damn."

"Yeah. I'm not sure she knew she even had that outfit in her closet."

"....are things okay with...you know, you and Miranda? There was a lot of mental noise and emotions and shit in the air yesterday. I wasn't listening, promise, just...kinda like ignoring someone shouting in your face."

"I just worry she's gonna freak over stuff that pops into my head sometimes. Telepathy is kinda freaky. No offense."

"It...unless she's crazy, she won't. I mean. How fair is that? Having an argument with someone over something you didn't really say? I get it. I think most people do."

I bet that Jen bitch doesn't...

"She does, I just feel bad anyway about ogling Brigid, I guess..."

"Kay, I don't even like girls like that and I was ogling her. She's gorgeous and she's never ever dressed like that ever. The only reason I even knew what was under the baggy clothes was living with her last year. It's not like you made out with her. "

"Well no... But I'm friends with her and I don't want Miranda to think it's because... you know... Because it's not!"

"Weren't you friends with her before she got all sexy? I think that kinda makes it okay."

"And people already thought I had a crush on her then!"

"Well. Did you? I mean. I'll stick up for you even if you didn't and stuff."

"No I didn't. I just think she's cool."

"Then tell your girlfriend that if she doubts you. Telepaths are pretty good at telling when you're telling the truth you know," she smirked.

"Good point."

"So..." she said, starting to pick out her clothes for the day. "Is Weaver more or less scary when you're dating her daughter," she smirked.

"Way scarier! Holy crap! She's way different at home but she's still terrifying."

"I can't imagine her not teaching or being in her office. It's so weird seeing teachers like...not teaching. It's like watching a dog walk on two legs."

"Yeah, it's really weird. She was making jokes and stuff..."

"Oh. Em. Gee. I literally could not even... That must have been sooooo weird."

Haley seemed to have no qualms about getting out of her workout clothes while continuing her discussion with her roommate.

"Wanna grab breakfast after I clean up and smell less groady?" she asked, grabbing her towel.

Kay is suddenly super-focused on packing her bag and double-checking to make sure she has everything.

"Yeah, sure, I'll wait."

"Awesome," she grinned, bouncing to the bathroom and showering quickly.

She reappeared wrapped in her towel a few minutes later and a few minutes after that was dressed and ready to go.

"So. When are taking Brig shopping?"

"I dunno. This weekend, Tuesday after Power Control maybe?"

Haley was thumbing through her phone as they were walking and she nodded, "Yeah...that should be awesome. We could invite your girlfriend if you wanted even."

"Yeah! If she wants to come. I'll ask her later."

"This should be a whole lotta fun then. Miranda is cool. She's been helping me learn more about the Astral and shit."

"That's that weird telepathy place Miss Weaver took us to once, right?"

"Yeah. I thought like, nothing good ever happened there, because like, literally , every time I've gone there, it's been by accident and something has tried to eat me, or possess me, or god knows what else. But she took me to some like really pretty places and on the Astral, I'm tall and awesome."

"That's pretty cool. People give you a lot of shit for being small, huh?"

"Oh my god, it sucks. The short jokes never stop. Finding clothes that fit is hard. I'm lucky that I have TK to help me reach shit.

"I know what that's like. Well, except the reaching for stuff."

"Plus everyone thinks I'm young," she pouted.
