The morning after the game of capture the flag, Will was sitting down for breakfast in the still-being-repaired cafeteria.

With every hammer, he winced. He looked bad, dark circles under his eyes as he slowly ate his cereal.

Alex also didn't look at his best that morning, but with him it was more something with the attitude than his appearance. He did, however, take a moment to pause as he looked around the cafeteria and the results of yesterday's festivities.

Oops...

Will winced and dropped his spoon as a particularly loud piece of equipment went off.

The motion more than the noise drew Alex's attention, and he winced when he saw how Will look. "Are... um... you all right?"

"Long night...Alex, right?

Let this be a lesson for you--don't get drunk."

"Yeah, you all won't let me," he said, taking a seat. "My luck I'd just get drunk, go nuts, and end up wrecking another wall."

"No, I mean...

...oh, you were the one who brought down the wall?"

"No. Well, yeah, I guess, but I kind of got thrown. So I guess it was done with me and not by me?"

"Ah.

I was an idiot, sticking the flag in here. Shoulda done it out on the quad."

"It made it more fun, at least," Alex offered, 'helpfully'. "I mean... lots of stuff out there to get busted up, too."

"Yeah, and it'll all be fine. Just...you know. It's all fun and games until the grounds crew murders me in my sleep."

"I stayed metal all night in case they tried," Alex admitted. Or in case of angry catguys.

"Hey, don't worry about it--it's that kind of enthusiasm we want to see. You guys did good! I just should have made less valuable things be in the way."

"Yeah, well, apparently I'm a dangerous predator or something, so I dunno. But thanks."

Alex shook his head. "You ever get a really, really skeevy vibe from someone, but no one else believes you?"

"Yeah. So I tried do warn people off, and he makes it out like I'm all dangerous or something, like I hurt Psywave yesterday or something. As if I could," he said, rolling his eyes.

"I dunno, you're pretty tough. With enough momentum, you could hurt almost anyone here."

"Well yeah, but I don't think I could hurt her. Have you seen the videos of her? She's, like, scary-tough. Besides, I didn't do anything that'd hurt her."

"Yeah, I don't think you did anything wrong. I'll admit, I haven't had time to break down all the tape yet, but from what I remember, you held your own quite well."

"Don't know about that. I got tossed around a lot. I guess 'being able to get back up' is holding my own."

He took a bite of his eggs. "How do you all make it look that easy?"

"You think it looks easy? I've gotten the shit kicked out of me more times than I'd like to count."

"Not always. I could show you some tape of me getting the shit kicked out of me, sometime.

The key is to keep getting up. You know, Michael Jordan missed a ton of shots and all that."

"Yeah, but he should have made a few too, right?" He shook his head. "I don't know. I thought it'd be easier. You turn to metal, there you go. Colossus never had issues."

"I don't know. It just seems like the most not-in-demand power here."

"Sorry. Now I'm getting bitchy enough that even I'm noticing it."

Alex chuckled at that one. "So what should I do then, if I'm ever going to be ready for that sort of stuff?"

"Keep practicing is the boring part of the answer. The exciting part is impress the hell out of Ryan and Steph in power control class--they're the ones in charge of deciding what the XI kids can do in the field."
