Theresa was filling out various forms with the university logo on them. She frowned at one, apparently contemplating an answer, while munching on her evening meal.

Graham stepped up, started to ask for permission to sit at the table, but shut his mouth before words came out. The teenager took a seat, deciding asking was dumb with a nearly empty table. A noise that might have been "hey" escaped him.

"Hey," Theresa responded, giving him the once over. "New?"

"Pretty new," he said, pretending he wasn't terrified of social rejection.

"Everybody's new once," she said with a smile, "I'm Theresa."

"Nice to meet you Graham," she said, apparently deciding on the right answer for the form and filling it in quickly. "Institute Sophmore or Junior?"

"Sophomore," he answered. "You?"

As if I actually went to high school before now.

"Planning on it. Don't know what to major in just yet. I think 'superhero work' is usually the euphemism."

"For 'I have no idea but saving the world sounds fun'? Sounds like about where I am too."

"Well, you've got a couple of years yet before you have to worry about it. I don't think anyone really expects you guys to know yet."

"Yeah... I never really thought of the future at all until recently."

Never expected a future like this for sure.

"Thinking of the future isn't the sort of thing we high schoolers generally do until we have to," she said with a chuckle. "Which is sort of how it should be."

"Well, someone's a pessimist," she laughed, "Yes, the world can be a dark and nasty place. All the more reason to hang onto the good stuff like not worrying about the future until you have to."

He reddened a little at the laugh.

"I... guess so."

"I see no one had the good grace to warn you about the resident weather witch," she said. "Look, there are plenty of pessimists here. I used to date one. And most of them have good reasons to be that way. Doesn't mean I don't try to talk them out of it."

"There's nothing wrong with that, just don't let it be all-consuming, or you'll miss a lot of life. Lord knows I missed plenty when my parents took me out of high school."

"I don't," he grumbled.

Then, he sighed. "Dad home-schooled us."
