Issue 1 Downtime

It was late at night in the common room when a puddle of black oozed along the floor. It stopped in front of the television someone had left on. On screen, a poorly acted teenage drama was playing.

Slowly the puddle began to form into a one of the girls on screen. It seemed the thing could only manage black and lighter shades of black though so she looked a bit strange, like an ink drawing come to life.

Christie wandered into the common room, holding a large bowl of popcorn. "Hey." she said "Whats up?"

The girl turned suddenly, looking surprised and defensive, "...Up? A direction towards an elevated position."

Nash walked into the common room and saw Christine and the other girl.

Nash didn't recognize her, and she did look a bit odd to him, but at this point he just assumed she was someone new.

"I was just saying 'hi'" Christie said, well used to weirdness "I'm Christie. Are you new here?"

The girl watched Nash suspiciously, "No. I have always been here. I belong here and you should not question that any further."

She was obviously a pro at lying.

"What?" Nash said as he walked closer to the two.

"Ok, seriously, who are you." Christie said.

"I do not have to answer you," the girl says, nervously backing away, "You are not my Mistress. You can not force me to do anything. Neither of you can."

She actually sounded fairly uncertain about this.

Nash looked over to Christie. "Okay, this is getting weird."

"Wait...." Christie said, this was sounding familiar "Are you Onyx?"

"Who is Onyx? My name is Emily Thorpe," the girl explains, "I am new to this school. I've met some of my wealthy neighbors, made a few new friends and I seemingly blend into the town."

Now she was obviously reading off the summary of a show from a TV Guide sitting on the coffee table.

Nash gave Christie another look as he walked over to look where the 'new girl' had been looking.

The girl swung her arm and it lashed out like a whip, breaking the table where the TV guide was sitting in half. Her eyes widened.

"I am sorry," she said. "I did not mean to do that."

"Wha?!" Nash jumped backwards, and then took a few more steps backwards.

His eyes quickly darted back and forth from the destroyed table to the girl.

"...I will fix that another time," Emily (?) says, "Rather, I will have one of the servants fix it."

"Hey, what's up, mah dudes and dudettes." Sid says as she walks in from wherever the hell she had been hanging out this late. She doesn't seem too perturbed by the demolished table. "We wreckin' the furniture?" she jokes(?) and cracks her knuckles.

"O-of course," Emily says, mistaking Sidney's enthusiasm for destroying property for normal behavior. She walks to the television and puts her hand against the screen. Her entire arm turns to a black liquid and seeps inside. It begins to spark and smoke as she steps away.

She turns back to Sidney, forcing a smile.

"No, you have been the one acting suspicious," Emily accuses Nash, "Why are you so curious of a fellow student? Do you have something to hide?"

"I believe this man might have escaped from the pens and is only pretending to be a Master," Emily says. As if any of that made any sense whatsoever.

"Against whom? Pod-people?" she asks, stepping up to her to take a closer look at her. And since Sidney isn't particularly big on personal space that means she puts her nose a couple inches from the girl at best.

Totally misreading the situation, Emily leans forward and attempts to kiss Sidney.

"I am strange?" Emily asks. She looks down at herself , examining her hands,

"I am different. It is odd," Emily says. "I think I may be broken. Wait. No. People are not broken, yes? I do not know the right word."

"...Something is wrong."

"The word you're looking for is weird. You're weird. So... did you jump out of some black and white movie? Space-radiation drained your colour? Specter from the mono-chrome dimension? Stop me when I get it right. Fell into a vat of bleach as a baby?"

"I really don't think this is what a mixed-race baby ends up as." she says, running a finger over Emily's arm to see if it's make-up that smears or who knows what.

Emily doesn't react to Sid's touch. Sidney's fingers would encounter slight resistance, but then go right through. It felt like the girl was made of some sort of thick liquid.

"I am not talking about ethnicity," Emily says, "Her mutation made her skin black. Like a shadow."

There was some sort of residue and what looked like ink smudges on her hand.

"No. That would be ridiculous," Emily says. "I am just a person. Like you."

"Well sure, you're a mutant, right? Just a really weird one." The way she keeps using it almost makes it seem like she considers 'weird' a compliment.
