Issue 1 Downtime

Laura yawned and rubbed her eyes as she went through the breakfast line. She was dressed in baggy sweats that made her look even smaller than normal. Morning was apparently not her time of day. She plopped down at a table and started nursing a cup of coffee, inhaling deeply of the aroma.

On the opposite end of the table, Lillian sat down with a plate full of bacon. Nothing else was on the plate, just bacon. Lots and lots and lots of bacon. She stared at it for several seconds, her eyes narrowed in focused concentration. Something was missing....

She looked up from her plate and glanced over at Laura. It was then that Lillian noticed her.

Her eyes fell on the other girl's coffee cup, widening with the realization of what she was craving. She left the table only to return minutes later with a half-cup of coffee and a container of cream filled to the brim. She emptied the entire container of cream into her coffee. Puuuurrrfect!

"Trying a little coffee in your cream?" Laura asked with a good-natured smile on her face.

Haley sat down next to her classmate, not seeing any other compelling choices of breakfast companions.

"Hey Lillian, hey new girl" she said cheerfully as she started buttering some toast.

"Exactly!" She said to Laura before her face fell in a frown. "Oh, dear. I didn't offer you any. I'm sorry. I can fetch some, if you would like."

" 'ello, Haley," the British kitten said in greet to her classmate while contemplating which bacon piece to attack first.

"I'm good, thanks though," Laura said, sipping at her coffee. "High schoolers?"

"Yep," she smiled, toast in one hand, cell phone in the other. "I freaking love your hair."

"Thanks. Yours isn't bad either," she said, her hair switching to blonde and matching Haley's style. "Not really my style though," she said as it reverted.

A piece of bacon fell from her mouth as she stared at Laura's color changing hair. "....wicked"

"That's awesome...every day I find someone else I want to trade powers with...I don't think you grabbed enough bacon," she smirked over at Lillian.

"What is it you do?" Laura asked, scooting down the table so that she was closer.

Haley lifted up the salt shaker sitting on the table with her TK.

this and that...powers are mostly a giant pain in the ass she replied telepathically.

"Oh, those are sweet powers," she said. "Wish I could do that."

"If you find a way to swap, they're all yours," she smirked.

She stuck her tongue out at Haley and went back to devouring her bacon.

"Keep sticking that out and I'll just grab it with my TK, Lillian," she teased

"Eh. It would come with these," she said, fanning out her wings. "And trust me, they're a pain."

Haley's eyes went wide. "Oh my god those are beautiful...can you fly?"

"More or less. Easier to hover than fly, but I can get off the ground."

Again Lillian was interrupted from her bacon eating pleasure, too distracted by Laura's beautiful wings to continue eating. "That's amazing! I'm jealous."

Laura folded her wings back into place. "Want to see a cool trick?" She grinned mischievously.

She nodded enthusiastically.

"I love stupid mutant tricks," she grinned. "I'll show you mine next."

Laura looked at Haley. Then her form changed, shrinking somewhat until Haley was looking at a fairly reasonable copy of herself, without wings of course. This, of course, made Laura's clothes even baggier, but she pushed her sleeves back and took another bite of her breakfast. "What do you think," she said in a rough approximation of Haley's voice.

Haley's jaw dropped. "That. Is. Awesome!"

"That's excellent! But you'll need a bigger mouth if you are to imitate Haley," Lillian implied, batting her lashes at Haley from over the rim of her coffee cup as she sipped at her caffeine.

"Oh go sniff some catnip," she smirked, flipping Lillian off good-naturedly

Laura relaxed and went back to her normal shape. "You guys like it here?"

"It's pretty cool, but a lot of weird shit happens. I miss home."

"Could be worse. It could be really boring."

"Boring might be nice for a change," she chuckled.

"Well, I like it here. Loads better than the orphanage." She downed the remainder of her coffee, purring with delight as she drank every last drop.

Laura blinked, "Yeah, I hadn't considered that comparison."

"Yeah. People here are generally nice too."
