I12DT - Upside Downside

Mary Ann was on one of the couches in the common room, reading. She couldn't properly be called 'sitting', because her feet were on the back of the couch and her head was nearly hanging off the edge of the seat. She only seemed marginally interested in her book though, eyes only casually following the words as she flipped lazily through the pages.

"Comfy, are we?" Will chuckled, walking in.

"For the moment," she said, closing the book and looking at him upside down. "I don't think we've met before."

"We might have, in passing -- the name's Will," he smiled.

"Mary Ann," she said, extending her hand. Then she stopped and adjusted herself, rolling around to sit properly and re-extending her hand. "Nice to meet you."

"Pleasure is all mine, I'm sure," he smiled.

"So...is that your thing? Using couches improperly?" he chuckled.

"No, that's just in my nature. Have you seen the big bear on the grounds?"

"Yeah, she's a good friend," Will said, misunderstanding.

"My brain must get fuzzier than I think when I shift then," she said. "Cause I really don't remember bumping into you while I was out and about."

"Oh, no, I meant Bear. You know Bear, right?

...You didn't mean an actual bear, did you?"

"I've met Bear. She's awesome. And yeah, I meant an actual bear." She grinned.

"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, around here."

"I won't show off in here," she said. "Also the last time I showed off I ended up fighting a pair of students, so I'm not real eager to do it again."

"Me? High school. Them too. Do you now Kay and Brigid?"

"I'm afraid I don't -- and I meant who you got into a scrap with," Will chuckled. "I haven't had a chance to meet most of the high schoolers socially."

"You should. We're cool... well... most of us are cool. And quite a few of us are tolerable."

"Yeah, I don't think anyone would have liked being in my skin. Not that anyone liked being in anyone else's skin, well, except maybe Kay. She seemed to enjoy being Brigid... and now I'm running my mouth."

Will chuckled. "Don't worry, I've heard enough of that to last me two or three lifetimes. Writing the reports, you see."

Mary Ann made a face. "Writing reports sounds dull. Is that what you do?"

"It's part of what I do. For all the great things you can say about my predecessors, record-keeping wasn't most of their fortes.

I head up the X-Teams at the moment."

"Well, it's something we've been talking about, actually -- and might be something to bring up with your Power Control teachers.

We don't exactly want to put all you guys on the front lines, of course, but a little bit of training in how to defend yourself couldn't hurt, right?"

"I'd sign up for it in a heartbeat," she said. "I remember seeing an e-mail from Mr. Gabriel about a Powered Self Defense class, but I think my recent snafu disqualifies me."

"As a bear. Don't really remember the specifics. Just going off what I was told."

"Ah, shifting troubles. I know how that can be. But that's why you have Steph there, to help you keep that under control."

"Yeah, I'm not sure how we could have prepared for this one. It involved Brigid in Kay's body and some sort of new spine power that Kay seems to have and stabbing. Then lots of raging and bear wrestling or so I'm told."

"Water under the bridge now anyway. The itching's even gone," she said with a laugh. "So what brings you into the manor?"

"We could probably all stand to take fewer risks, so I applaud your decision."
