Issue 1 Downtime

Feeling hungry, Ben headed to the cafeteria for some lunch. Filling up a tray, he took a seat at a table by himself and started eating.

"Hey there.."

A kid in a wizard hat pulled up, bearing a similarity loaded tray.

"Mind if I join you? The tables are pretty crowded today.."

Ben tries to talk with a mouth full of sandwich, realizes what he's doing, and shuts his mouth.

He then promptly chokes on his sandwich.

A coughing fit later, Ben takes a deep breath, "Sorry. Yeah, I mean, it's fine! Go ahead."

He got settled, apparently not noticing the choking too much.

"I'm tommy. Who're you?"

"Ben," Ben says, "Ben Brant. I mean, my real name's Benjamin, so you can call me Benny or Benjy or Benjamin, or whatever else. But most people just call me Ben."

"...."

"...I like your hat."

He seemed sincere. If awkward.

"You are, get the hell out of my seat," she said, not keeping a straight face for very long before breaking into a wide grin.

"Nah, you're fine cutie," she giggled, taking a seat with the boys.

"I'm Haley!"

For a moment Ben actually looked worried, then relieved when she revealed her joke.

"Benjamin. Or Ben. Or whatever," Ben says.

Cal, meanwhile, was looking unamused as he walked up on that exchange. Reflecting that maybe he should start flirting with every girl he came across to show her how awesome seeing that was, then realizing he didn't want to be laughed at by everyone, he sat down close enough to Haley to make the 'back off' point. "Hi," he said, turning his tray around toward his seat.

If he got any 'back off' vibe from Cal, he didn't seem to register it. He looked just as friendly and outgoing as before. Like a big dumb puppy.

"Hey sexy," she grinned at Cal, planting a kiss on his cheek as he took his seat. She didn't seem to be picking up on his jealousy either. That or she was ignoring it.

Haley shrugged, "school is school. Lots of drama. Some kinda Shitty people. But I guess on the whole it's pretty fun especially the danger room"

"Oh, sorry, miss," Ben says, looking a little embarassed. He even blushes a bit, "I don't swear. I mean, not that I mind if people do. Personal preference and all. My best friend, Jimmy, he swears like a sailor and is the nicest guy you'd ever meet."

"I just don't like to. Sorry if that seems kind of snobbish, miss."

Ben blushes again. It seemed to be fairly easy to embarass the kid, "Sorry. Habit and all. Who's Miss K? A teacher?"

Ben concentrates and after a moment, he begins to glow brightly.

"Pretty much, yeah!" Ben says, "I can even change the color and everything."

Ben demonstrates by shifting the glow from white to blue to red.

Meanwhile Ashlie is doing her usual cafeteria dance of taking forever to pick something to ~~analyze~~ eat, glancing over at the glow coming from one of the tables. Finally settling on something she walks over curiously.

"And if ya want to see a really neat trick, check this out!" Ben says excitedly, not noticing ASHLIE just yet. The glow drains from his skin as he concentrates harder, focusing on shifting any nearby light sources from their normal color to a neon pink.

This breaks Ben's concentration, returning the colors to normal.

"Yeah, I suppose you're right," Ben says, "That gets tiring pretty quick."

Ben finally notices ASHLIE, "Oh gosh, miss, I didn't mean to be rude. Didn't even see you there or else I'd of said 'hi' instead of showing off."
