Issue 1 Downtime

Steve stifled a mighty yawn as he took a seat at one of the cafeteria tables, paying no attention to whoever else might be sitting there. Between the reoccurring nightmare of that day everything changed, the new bed he hadn't gotten used to, and... something he couldn't quite put his finger on... he had slept terribly since he had arrived at the school. He looked like it too.

Haley stopped in front of Steve's table with a tray full of food in her hands. "Hiya," she said cheerfully, "this seat taken?"

"Huh?" he said as he blinked the creeping tiredness away, "Oh. No. Feel free."

"Where are ya from?"

His eyes widened in puzzled shock.

"Yeah... I mean, I've had the one since before here but... well, okay, I can't remember what there were about or even really nightmares but... well something keeps waking me up."

It seems like its worse for me, and I am...but talking to one of the teacher she gave me something that sort of helped. Steve would hear Haley's voice in his head--though her lips weren't moving.

He shivered slightly at the mindspeak.

"Gave you something?" he asked quietly, not having quite yet figured out how to communicate mentally.

"Yeah," she said normally. "Like a necklace that I wear. And if the dreams are related to like...being here, it helps block them. It doesn't help with all of my bad dreams, but the ones that really keep me from sleeping? Works really well."

Cal walked through the cafeteria, tray in hand, smiling when he saw Haley an heading over in that direction.

Oooor not, he thought, doing an about face when he saw the muscley guy she was sitting with and heading toward a different table. Shit.

"Nice to meet ya, Steve." She said friendly enough while she kept eating her yogurt.

She noticed Cal's abrupt turn and frowned. So she promptly stood up and yelled across to cafeteria.

"Over here, Cal!"

It was less clear than the images he caught, but Steve heard the loud mental comment and jumped slightly. He was about to say something when she yelled to Cal. Looking towards Cal, he blinked.

This place keeps getting weirder.

Cal sighed, turning around to where the girl he liked was sitting with some big musclebound jock. "Hey, babe," he said, taking a seat next to her, his eyes fixed on his tray.

Haley turned back to Steve, "We're plotting world domination. If you get in good with us, I'll let you be one of my lieutenants."

Steve's ability to catch verbal thoughts was poorly developed, so the Douchey McJockface comment sailed right by him unheard. But he did catch Haley briefly imagining said fashion show, and looked back and forth between the two before cracking up.
