Issue 1 Downtime

Ryan stretched his back as he sat down, a little sore from the morning's workout as he sat down at a lunch table. And more training this afternoon. Whee, he griped to himself as he started on his food.

"Hey, fly boy." Rachel said as she started to sit down "Is this seat taken?"

"Well, I was saving it for a pretty redhead that I know, and oh! There she is!" he said with a grin, nodding her toward the seat.

"How've you been?" Rachel asked, sitting down across from him.

"Oh, not bad. Lectures and training schedules are kicking my ass, I think I got spoiled over the summer," he said. "How about you? Still settling in all right?"

"I think so." Rachel said "My classes are interesting and I'm getting to meet a lot of new people. They've even roped me into tutoring one of the XI kids."

"Its cool." Rachel said "We've met once, sort of informally. She's a nice kid, but if the theory about her power is right, she needs to work on her attitude."

"She's not the only one," Ryan said, sighing a little. "But she's gotten a little better since she got here, at least, so I don't think it's hopeless."

"If they aren't all insecure because of their powers, they've got home problems. Or they're flipped out about being displaced over here from home. Or they're just taking all their teenage-mutant angst out on us by being little jackasses in class. I think we might have... oh, three who could be considered what passes for a well-adjusted teenager."

"Seven should be good," he agreed. "Y'know, if you do want to stay in you can just tell me. Not exactly a bad thing to have someone reminding me that I need to do my studying," he added with a smile. "Just, y'know, something to remember for the future."

"Going ok." Rachel said "They mostly have me shadowing one of the healers, to get a better idea of how to use my power."

"Yeah, I've heard that usually lasts a week or two before they let you start getting your hands dirtier," he said. "So you might be on your own by the time I have my first visit," he added teasingly.

"I hope not." Rachel said "I can't actually heal people, so I'm going to be stabilizing patients until the docs or the healers do their thing."

"Well, yeah." Rachel said "I'm just saying, my main job is going to be keeping people stable. Although one of the docs thinks I might be able to learn to help diagnose hormone disorders."

"Sorry," Ryan said holding up his hand in surrender. "Reflex. I've known plenty of people who go in with their power and let that define what they can do and what they should learn and don't bother learning beyond that. I'm projecting, I'll stop."
