Bonfire - Keeping Her Distance

((open thread))

Murphy keeps to the edges of the bonfire, trying to socialize without having to be social. She wasn't the most personable in the best of times and lately she felt uncomfortable, anxious and all mixed up.

She sighs and settles onto the ground. Maybe it would be better to just go be a hermit. Hermitess?

Murphy cocks her head to one side and tries to figure out if "hermit" had a feminine form.

"Hey, you," Theresa said, walking barefoot towards Murphy. Her eyes are still glowing green and she occasionally glances at the sky. "I was wondering if you'd make an appearance tonight."

Murphy smiles shyly at Theresa, "Hey."

"Sounded fun," Murphy says. "...Feels weird though."

"Weird how? Just the number of people?" She settled back onto the grass and dug her fingers into the dirt a little.

Murphy shakes her head, "Big fire. Dark woods. People."

"Feels like an old memory," Murphy says.

"Well, I'm sure you've gone to this sort of thing before," she said, tilting her head as she regarded Murphy.

Murphy hugs her knees tightly, curling up into a ball. She looks a bit uncomfortable, "Older than that."

"Like older older? Like... past life kind of older?"

"Maybe," Murphy says. She glances towards Theresa. She almost looks scared now.

"I don't feel...human anymore," Murphy explains.

"That's... not really good, hon. What's going on?"

"Don't know," Murphy says. She shakes her head. "Can't..."

She gestures uselessly, searching uselessly for the right words. Finally she gives up trying to explain it and just sighs.

"Being silly. Bad dreams. That's all."

"You know I'll listen no matter how long it takes, right? If you're not feeling human, that's not a good thing, especially with what you've got rattling around in your head."

Murphy nods. She's quiet for a little bit.

"Yesterday," Murphy explains. "Went to get books. Smelled...something. Someone."

"Followed them. Stalking. Realized what I was doing and I..." Murphy rubs her head. "Ran home. Scared."

"Something like that," Murphy says.

"Don't know what to do," Murphy says. "Cages? Cures? All feels like dying."

Murphy leans her head against Theresa.

Theresa smelled slightly less wolfy than she usually did as she leaned her head against Murphy's. "Well, I would never let anyone put you in a cage. And if it's not going to be cured, that only leaves control."

If Murphy notices the change, she doesn't react. She just sighs happily.

"Love you."

"Sort of the same way I harness the weather. I've been using some of the same techniques I use there. A lot of willpower involved. I've also been exploring my connection to the Earth Mother a bit more to see how it can help me."

"Yeah, I started communing with her last spring. Took me a while to figure out that's what was going on. Been trying to figure out more about what it means. It's a very primal thing. Kind of like the... other thing."
