Miranda glances at Kay as they pick up their toasting forks and choice of cylindrical, campfire-friendly meat. "Something on your mind?"

"Hmm? Oh, nah, not really. Just... wondering why you don't really want to learn how to fly. It looks fun."

"It's complicated," Miranda said, "And most of it has to do with my hangups about the future. And they seem kind of tied to how I see myself and that's not always reliable and you want your wings to be reliable." Then she confessed, "I really don't understand it myself sometimes."

"Okay... I don't wanna talk you into anything you don't feel like doing. Just seems weird, cause, well, it's flying. People dream about that. Literally."

"I know," Miranda said, stabbing her fork through a sausage and sitting down to hold it to the fire. "I just... I worry. It's stupid, but I do."

"Nah, it's not. I mean you don't wanna fall, right? I just figured your mom would be able to help you with that." she says, poking at her own sausage with her fork before finally spearing it for real.

"Mum tends to fly by splitting into a flock of ravens. And Mom... is Mom. I already have enough classes with her. I don't think I could stand one more right now."

"That sucks." she says, noting the expression on Miranda's face. "Sorry. Still a sore spot, huh?"

"A bit," Miranda confessed. "I'll always love her. I just don't like her very much right now."

"Parents, right?" she tries to joke but it falls a little flat when her voice hitches a bit on the first word.

Miranda leaned her head on Kay's shoulder and folded one wing around her. "Sorry," she said softly.

"No, it's alright. I mean..." she sighs and leans her head against Miranda's. "Well okay, not gonna lie, kinda jealous you got a mom who talks to you and stuff."

"Well, her not talking to me is kind of the current problem, so don't be too jealous," Miranda joked weakly.

"At least she cares. Right? I mean she's scary-mean in class but I didn't think she was mean-mean..."

"She claims she was protecting me or something. I don't really think I need protecting. Do you think I need protecting?"

"What? No! Of course not. I'm not agreeing with her or anything! I just... I shouldn't have said anything."

"Sorry," Miranda reflexively apologized, taking her wing away so she didn't make Kay any more uncomfortable than she seemed to already be managing to do.

Of course that only makes Kay feel like Miranda is withdrawing from her because she said something wrong and she sullenly holds her sausage into the flames.

"I saw you signed up for the X-Team thingie." she says after the silence gets too awkward between them.

"Yeah. I thought I might as well try the evaluation. Worst they can say is 'no'."

"I get the feeling that's not what I'll be evaluated on, but thank you for the encouragement," she said, smiling at her.

"Well we all got our strength, right? If they're gonna test what everyone is worst at no one's gonna make the team."

"I'm just afraid I'll get deference because of who my parents are." From the tone in her voice, the choice of 'afraid' wasn't an idle one.

"Or maybe that'll help." she says, not realizing that that probably isn't any better. She's too busy pretending to know what 'deference' means to notice though.

Miranda sighed and leaned forward, resting her head on her knees and she slowly rotated her fork in front of the fire. "I'm not keeping you from having fun, am I?"

Miranda glanced at her, a curious look on her face. "You really think it's important? I sort of feel like I might be making it a bigger deal than it is."

Miranda adjusted and leaned her head back on Kay's shoulder. "It's nice to have someone who cares about how I feel instead of how they think I'll feel."

Kay smiles and snakes her arm around Miranda's waist. "You know, you're a telepath. You could totally make people feel how you feel."

"I'm not that good a telepath," Miranda chuckled. "I don't quite get other people's minds."

"Well you only gotta get your own. Just shout your thoughts at them. Like, I can make my thoughts sound loud, they just don't go beyond my head. That's how it works, right?"

"You have to be a little more subtle than that if you want them to actually feel it. Otherwise they know it's foreign because it doesn't mesh with their thoughts. And if you think loud enough when I'm 'listening', I could probably hear your thoughts."

"Well I dunno if you'd want them to think they're their own thoughts anyway. That seems... kinda creepy. Can telepaths do that?"

"Skilled telepaths can. Ethical ones, the good ones, don't."

She nods contemplatively. "It's kind of spooky to think about."
