You can't have an English hedge maze without Welsh dragons, or at least that's what Gemma had decided when she'd plopped her dragon self down in a corner of the hedge maze and started trying to figure out how to work an e-reader with claws. She was just giving a frustrated grunt when she caught sight of Barbara walking through the maze. "Lost?"

"Hrm? Oh, maybe. It's a lot bigger than it looks from outside."

"Appearances can be deceiving that way, especially when you can't get a good look at it from above. I'm Gemma." She gave a little wave with one foreleg.

"So, the rumors were true, then?"

"That depends on the rumors."

"That there's a dragon here."

"I'm just a mutant like everyone else, but I can turn into a dragon. So there is a dragon here, sort of?"

"Well, yeah. I didn't say you were a REAL dragon."

"My other half is bristling a little, she likes to think she's a real dragon. She's not, but she likes to think she is."

"Long story. Sometimes when I shift, it's like I have a second personality. She lingers around in the back of my head most of the time, offering color commentary."

"Oh. I see...that must be difficult..." she said, evasively.

"It has its moments, good and bad," she said with a smile. "Once we got to know each other better, it become a lot nicer. She was kind of raging at first."

"After first I couldn't. Then, once I got to understand her better, I understood more what made her angry."

"Well, for starters, she was a part of me, but she didn't feel like she had a voice or a say in things. And I was fighting her all the time."

"But if she's dangerous, it's best to NOT have her have a say in things, right?"

"That's what I thought at first. But treating her like that just made her worse when she did take control. Kind of like bottling up an explosion."

"That's still better than letting everything explode."

"You'd think that, but it would build and build and explode anyway, only it would be a lot worse than the original explosion would have been. And the metaphor breaks down there somewhere, but you get the idea. I had to learn to deal with her on 'our' terms, not my terms or her terms."

She folded her forelegs, one on top of the other. "Speaking from experience? If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. I know talking about it was the last thing I wanted to do."

"My misunderstanding. I'm sorry," she said, though the part about everyone else being crazy didn't appear to sit well. "I don't think everyone here is crazy."

"I'm not saying it's right. It's just the reality." Gemma frowned, "If you don't want to be here, I'm sure you could go back to the States and register."
