Issue 1 Downtime

Charles was sitting on the grass while staring at a clawed hand trying to shift it back. Based on the look of frustration on his face it wasn't going particularly well.

"Charles, everything okay?" Miranda asked, walking up with a walking stick in hand.

"What? Oh, Miranda," Charles said looking over at Miranda, "Not really... I'm still having problems shifting back."

Miranda was wearing a hood pulled down over her eyes. "Tried the whole 'picture in your mind' stuff?"

"That's what I've been trying," Charles shrugged. "It's not really a big deal. Just frustrating."

"Are you doing okay, Miranda?"

"Doing really well. For the most part. Trying to get a handle on a few things."

"Isn't that why we're here?" Charles said wryly while flexing his clawed hand. "That's good though... Especially after everything that happened."

"Yeah. And stuff just seems to keep happening. Getting weirder in some ways, but better in others."

"Weirder?" Charles asked looking at Miranda. "Things can get weirder than they already are?"

"I...well...congratulations?" Charles asked awkwardly.

"Well, you have family to share the weirdness with at least," Charles smiled, "I'm happy for you really, but I'm also kind of glad the weirdest things I've had to deal recently are problems with my shifting."

She looked down at his hand, "Maybe if you relaxed? Weren't trying so hard to... un-shift?"

"I hadn't thought of that," Charles said taking a deep breath and then exhaling slowly. He continued breathing slowly and his hand began shifting back slowly. After a couple minutes it was back to normal and Charles looked up at Miranda.

"That.... is something to keep in mind next time I wake up looking like something out of a horror movie. You're pretty good at all of this... stuff."

She sighed, "Yeah, I'm sort of nothing but this stuff. It's a... long story."

"All they wanted was some kind of living weapon probably didn't matter what I looked like," Charles said flexing his hand. "We've got nothing but time if you want to talk about it."

She thought about it for a minute, "I'm not really a person. Well, not in the sense that you would think of normally. I wasn't kidnapped like you were. They made me."

Charles was quiet for a moment.

"Does that really make you not a person?" Charles asked.

"I honestly don't know. Mom and Mum seem to say I'm still a person. I'm not certain how I feel about that particular part of it yet."

"Well, I think you're a person," Charles said, "Though not really sure how much my opinion matters... I mean how you feel about it is supposed to be what's important."

"I don't know," Charles said, "I mean it's beautiful here, but sometimes it feels like a zoo or a nature preserve rather than a school if that makes any sense... Maybe if I got out a bit more I'd feel differently."

"The place is relatively mutant-friendly. I think the school does a lot of business there which helps everyone's attitude. But not everyone is, so just keep your eyes open."

"Probably why I've kept myself cooped up in my room since they brought us here."

"Except these hornets shoot lightning from their eyes and things like that," Charles smiled. "Wonder if I'll be able to fly or something like that? Though not sure how well everybody would handle an actual giant flying.... insect... thing."
