A man stood outside the gates, hands in his pockets. He was wearing a business suit that was at least a couple of years out of fashion and looked like it was due for a replacement. When the guard approached him, he said, "Andrew Caine. I'm here to see someone named Ashlie."

The intercom at the gate comes to live.

"What business do you have with her?"

"She's been researching some of my old patents. Given where they ended up, I just thought I should give her a warning. If I've got the wrong address, I apologize. This is the sixth place I've tried to find her."

The gate unlocks.

"She will be with you in a moment."

"Thank you," he said to the intercom before stepping through the now unlocked gate.

After a couple minutes a white-haired woman in her mid to late thirties wearing a business suit steps out from the main entrance of the mansion.

"Mister Caine?"

"As you said, I am hard to find. And if they did not want their chip to be analyzed they shouldn't have used it to track our lawyer. Though I would appreciate if you could answer some questions about the process of the inductive energy transfer."

"I would be happy to," he said, smiling. He checked his watch. "You don't happen to have a water fountain close by, do you? I'm afraid I have a condition that requires timely medication."

Ashlie leads him to a small conference room just as her robot chassis places glasses and a pitcher of water on the table.

"Welcome." it says with a excessively electronic filter to make it sound different from Ashlie's regular voice.

"I wanted something like this at my company, but we ran out of money," he said, pouring himself a glass of water.

"We have a lot of salvaged parts to work with." the hard-light avatar says. "Why did your company fail? That chip design is rather inspired from what I could tell."

"We had some... difficulties." He fished a pill out and downed it with a glass of water. "I think we may have diversified a bit too much. Got spread too thin."

She nods. "We have no business ties and are mostly funded through X-Corp and private donations so we don't have to worry about generating profit with our projects."

"Someone else did, but they squandered it's potential by using it to power a locator signal. If I could get the necessary specs to reproduce it, then I could implement it as a self-regulating mechanism to drive self-improving electronics. I have the algorithms but I lack the technical expertise to implement the inductive chip into the design."

"That would be great." she says, the projector in the room turning on out of seemingly nowhere and displaying all the information Ashlie has on the chip and it's design. "This is what we've been able to piece together so far."

"This part right here is the part we were having problems with." He pointed to one section of the design. As he did so, his hand seemed to briefly cramp up. "Sorry about that. This alloy allows for the induction to take place. The transition to the storage is the tight point. If the energy source is too strong, it tends to burn out."

"Ongoing medical condition. The medicine deals with it," he said. "It just takes a bit. You said they were using this for tracking?"

"Yes. Apparently they wanted to masks it by having a constant flow of power to the tracking component without the need for a battery that could be detectable by a variety of sensors."

"And it could be a solution to the storage problem. One chip draws energy to transfer to a battery which serves as an equalizer for another chip that provides the energy for other functions. A stacked array like that would buffer fluctuations in energy better."
