Issue 1 Downtime

Miranda, despite the cold, was sitting on a bench on the grounds with a sketchbook in her lap and a pencil. She was in the process of filling one of the pages with the image of a run down Greco-Roman temple that bore some resemblance to a public library. She stopped, frowning at it for a moment, then going back to filling in details. It wasn't high art and she needed a lot of practice, but it wasn't bad for her.

"Aren't you cold?" a bundled up Nailah asks as she walks up to Miranda.

"Some," she said, not looking up from her drawing. "I forgot my coat in my room."

Nailah steps up to her side to take a look at what she's drawing.

"That looks good. Are some of your memories coming back?" she asks, nodding towards the sketch.

"Maybe?" She sounded really uncertain. "I just can't get this out of my head." She finished what looked vaguely like a charred human outline on one of the columns.

"I'd hope this isn't something you've seen..." she says, noting the human outline.

"I think I may have... But I don't know where," she said, adjusting her shoulder's position to where Nailah might put a hand on it.

"It'll come to you in time." she says, placing a hand on the girl's shoulder.

Miranda glanced confusedly at the hand, then up at Nailah. "Didn't you do that just a moment ago?"

"Yes and no. It's still happening, is it?"

"Sort of," she said, relaxing under Nailah's hand. She lifted the sketchbook for Nailah to get a closer look. "Remind you of anything?"

"It looks familiar alright. Could be a temple, could be an US library mirroring the style."

She looked at it again herself. "That word... temple... feels right."

"Sad... Angry..." She frowned as she puzzled through something. "Lost..."

She nods, thought she can't quite make sense of it herself.

"You're doing the right thing putting these things on paper. It may not make sense right now, but it might just be part of a larger picture."

"I don't even know how I know how to do this," she growls in frustration.

"It's part of who you are. You're just rediscovering it. These things are scary when they're new and we don't understand them, but you can explore them and learn to control it. That's one of the things we teach at this school. It might feel like it's coming from somewhere else, but it isn't. It's part of you and most of the time it's trying to help."

"It's all real in it's own way, but... I know what you mean and I'm afraid I don't have an easy answer. There are ways you can teach your mind to recognize when you're dreaming and it works a little something like that. The most important thing is to not fight it. And I know that's easier said then done. It took me a long time to learn that, but that was when I had very little help."

She looked like she was about to say something and then she zoned out for a moment. Her head turned as if she was looking around and she whispered, "I don't recognize this place."

"Don't worry, you're still right here." she says, giving Miranda's shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Tell me what you see."

"I'm in a hallway. The walls are... stone? concrete? Hard-looking." She looks down, "The floor looks like tiles. There's a curved staircase going up. Electric lights on the ceiling. A red box that says 'emergency' and there's lights on it to, but they're not on." It sounded a lot like one of the upper hallways in the lighthouse.

She looked over her shoulder on the bench. "There's a door... It has your name on it. I..." Her vision line came to rest on Nailah and the muscle movement in her face changed, the flexs in the muscles around her 'eyes' becoming more pronounced and rapid.

"That's the Lighthouse. Are you okay?" she asks, worry creeping into her voice.

"So... much..." Her hand came up to cover her eyes in a useless gesture.

"Try to focus on my voice. The Lighthouse can be... overwhelming. But you're out here in the garden with me."

"I... I can't," she said, reaching for where she was hearing Nailah's voice. Her face scrunched for a moment and then she rocked slightly. Suddenly, she attempted to wrap her arms around Nailah.

Nailah's a little stiff for a second but then wraps one arm around the scared girl, her other hand on the back of her head.

"It's all right, you're safe here."

"There were... other things there... so many other things..." She said, sniffling as she hugged Nailah tightly.

"I know... I know. There's... a reason I haven't shown you the Lighthouse yet. I didn't want you to get lost. But you're not, your right here and everything's alright."

Miranda hugged Nailah tighter, almost like she was clinging to an a piece of flotsam after a shipwreck. Then abruptly, she let go a fraction of a second before Nailah had thought she might.

"Feeling better?" she smiles gently, trying not to be surprised by the girl preempting her own precognition.

"We might have to get you started on tutoring sessions soon. I was going to let you settle in a bit more first, but I think it might be better to get started sooner rather than later."

"Let's say tomorrow after classes in the Danger Room? Don't mind the name, it's a room that lets offers us a lot of tools to find a place you're most comfortable with. I'd also recommend trying to find a medium you enjoy, but it looks like you've been working on that already." she smiles, nodding at the sketch. "Still, I think we have some experimentation to do there to see what works best to channel your powers."
