Issue 1 Downtime

Natalya was sitting on a bench in the garden. Where she'd gotten a block of ice as tall as she was, it was probably best not to ask, but one sat in front of her. Her hair was a lighter blue than normal and the ice did not appear to be melting as it should. She just looked at it, as if she was trying to discern something in it.

Mars drops down out of a tree, landing next to Natalya.

"Hey," Mars says, "What's up?"

"Hey, Mars. Been dealing with work crap," she said. The ice block twitched a bit. "How're you doing?"

"Not too bad," Mars says, "What sort of work crap?"

"Lots of junk involving shadowy government organizations with access to be able to falsify or eliminate records. The type of stuff I was hoping to get away from," she said. She gestured and the ice block reformed into a horse, "But if wishes were horses..."

"I don't know much about secret organizations, Natalya," Mars says, "But you should tell them to take a flying leap. I mean, what are they going to do about it? Just about everyone at this school could fight off an army by themselves."

"If I don't take them on, someone could end up in a lot of trouble, maybe even get thrown out of the country where we can't protect them." Another gesture and the block of ice returned to its former shape.

Mars frowns, "Can I do anything to help?"

"Not at the moment. But thanks for offering." The block shuddered and became a Japanese mecha-inspired piece.

"You know it's totally cool that you can do that," Mars says, "If you ever get sick of teaching, you could probably take that show on the road."

"This show's been on the road long enough. I'm glad to take it off the road, even if things aren't quite as quiet as I'd like." The ice mecha waved at Mars.

Mars waves back, "Yeah, I guess traveling is sort of overrated after awhile."

"You get to see exotic places, but at the end of the day, you're working with the same people you were before, some of whom are genuine assholes." The ice mecha struck a muscle flexing pose.

The mecha saluted and then went back into an ice block. "Classes going okay?"

Mars looks thoughtful, "That's actually really good advice."

"I'm not used to getting good advice from adults," Mars says, "I'm not sure what to say."

"I did watch a movie with one of the boys here the other day," Mars says, "It was nice. Although the movie was pretty terrible."

"That's a good start," Natalya said nodding. "And seeing movies with a significant other is rarely about the movie. Not that you're at that point... just sayin'."
