Sept 5th - She Can Dance?

After almost nervously making sure that the exercise room is empty Jennifer puts her earphones on, cranks up the volume on her iPod and starts to dance. Not perfect, but for someone who usually moves at a snail's pace and has the reaction time of a sloth it's more than surprising. Almost as if she'd saved up all her movement and energy for this one thing.

Murphy was wandering through the rec center when she spotted Jennifer. At first, she was going to say "hi", but when she saw Jennifer was dancing, she stopped and watched from the door.

She's surprisingly good and looks like she must have at least taken some classes in modern dance. After a while she notices Murphy in the doorway and suddenly stops, almost falling over from sheer momentum and stumbling forward a couple steps to catch herself.

"Oh... uh..." she manages to get out.

"Oh my god! That was beautiful!" Murphy says. "Where did you learn to dance? Did someone teach you? Can you teach me? That looks really, really, really, fun. Is it fun? How did you balance on your foot like that?"

"I... yeah... I mean what?" she mumbles, still looking like a deer caught in the headlights.

"I'm Jennifer... You're in my calculus class." she says, awkwardly lowering her arms to her sides and adapting her normal, sort-of-slumped posture again.

"Oh, yeah! I've seen you before. You're the girl that never smiles," Murphy says. "I actually like calculus. It's pretty neat. I mean, it can be hard, but it's sort of like figuring out a puzzle."

"You don't have to stop dancing by the way," Murphy says. "I mean, I can go away if you want. I just wanted to let you know that you looked really good and happy and everything. So...yeah. Don't let me, y'know, ruin that."

"I just don't smile for over every tiny thing..."

"That is so cool," Murphy says. "You're, like, all strong and serious and you can dance and your hair is so pretty and long..."

"I.. uhm... thanks. You... talk a lot." she tries to reciprocate on the complimenting.

"Like, what kind of mood?" Murphy asks. "A sad mood? Or a happy one?"

"No. I dunno... Either? Happy or sad doesn't really matter so much for it."

"What does matter?" Murphy asks. "I mean, sorry, I know this is a weird question, but I'm kind of curious what it feels like. 'Cause it looked like you were floating and I think that's kind of amazing."

"It just feels... right. It's like how you can enjoy a sad movie or cry at a funny one."

Murphy nods, "Cool."

"Do you mind if I watch you some more? I won't bother you or anything."

Jennifer takes a deep breath and turns her back to Murphy, so she can pretend that nobody's watching. She starts up her iPod again and starts to dance.

Murphy is absolutely engrossed in the entire performance. When Jennifer is finished, Murphy starts clapping with a sincere enthusiasm.

"That is so amazing," Murphy says. "You are so cool."

"It's just dancing..." she says a bit awkwardly, sitting down in the middle of the room.

"So? I can't dance. I get all tangled in my feet," Murphy tries to demonstrate by spinning on her heel, when she starts to sink through the floor. "Oh, nutbars. Umm...."

Murphy was very slowly sinking into the floor, as if it were quicksand, "...I'm glad this is proving my point but I could definitely use a little help."

"Oh jee!" she pushes herself off the floor and walks over to Murphy. She tries to grab her hand but her fingers just go right through Murphy's. "Uhm..."

"Uh... Jean-Louise?" she asks the floor. And then after thinking for a moment, she closes her eyes in concentration. "Jean-Louise?"

Oh my god, it is so cool down here! A little dark....

There was a muffled crashing sound from the basement.

...a lot of shelves.

Is there a basement?

"Hey! Can you hear me!" she tries to think slowly and loudly.

Jenni? Is that you? Where are you? I can't see...

Another crash.

That sounded expensive.

"Basement. Find a door." she thinks and wanders off to find some stairs that might lead to the basement.

Meanwhile, Murphy is carefully walking around in the dark basement, trying to find a light switch and not run into anything else. The room seemed to be some sort of large storage area.

After trying and failing to find a door Jennifer heads back to the room she'd been in.

"I can't find a door. I'm gonna go and get Paul."

A little while later...

Jennifer leads Paul into the room and wanders around for a bit until she finds the spot that Murphy probably sank through. At least approximately.

"Okay, can you make a thing that leads to the basement here?"

He frowned, looking at the floor. "Yeah, I think so. How far down is the basement? Right underneath the floor?"
