"Yes, but....I know...." Mars paced back and forth through the gym, talking on her phone. Since her disappearance, her father had decided to keep in touch a bit more.
Mars held the phone away from her ear for a minute. She rolled her eyes as he ranted. When it sounded like he was finally finishing things up, she brought it back to her ear again.
"Okay, sir. Yeah. I love you too. Bye."
Mars closed her phone. Then she made a shrill, frustrated noise.

Mira was coming from another direction, with a tupperware under one arm.
"Weights not cooperating?"

"No matter how often I ask, they won't stack themselves neatly on my father," Mars says.

"Drat," Mars says. She walks over to retrieve her phone. "Sorry. I do not mean to be so...aggravated."

"No. My father is just being a --- " Mars makes several cruel remarks in French. "He is a very controlling man. It's annoying."

"Generally? Quit school and take over the family business," Mars says.

"That's sort of what I'm doing here," Mars says. "But my dad..."
"What are your parents like?"

"I made extras, and while I'm keeping most for me and Kevin, I'm giving some to people who need it. It looks like you need it."

Mars smiles, "...I'm sorry. I didn't even...ugh, I'm being rude today. I'm Mars. Marcie, actually, but I go by Mars."

"Sometimes, yes. I've been away for a while, but that's why I've come back here. TO reconnect with my past, you know?
You should value your past--it helped shape who you are."

"I know, I know," Mars sighs. "And the worst part is that it's not like I would mind that much. I like the work and I'm good at it, but I don't want to wish that I had done something else when I'm older. Something...different."
There was also the issue of the criminals and assassins out for her life, but Mars was the type of person to focus on one problem at a time.

"I...don't know. I ended up giving up a lot to fulfill my function, but it was to save someone's life. I don't know what choice I would have made otherwise, if I even had a choice."

"I don't mind change, but why should you have to sacrifice things for it?" Mars asks. "Why can everything just be...good..er."

"Why not?" Mars asks. "Why do we have to accept that there has to be an inequality? That everything is finite and what one person has, another has to be deprived of?"
"I mean, why don't we ever question that?"

"I wish it were that simple. But until everyone agrees what is good, someone will be displeased with any choice you could make. Just make sure it's not YOU who are displeased."
