"Blast and hellfire!" Roland swore, looking through the phonebook.

"Alright, what the hell do people call automobiles these days." he said, to whoever else was in the staff common room.

"Cars. Though if you're looking to replace that Trabant I'm not sure it's cars you're looking for."

"What on Earth are you talking about," Roland said.

"I'm insulting your old 'automobile'."

"That automobile was state of the art, and never put a foot wrong. I've been trying to find the number of the local Trabant dealership, but I've come up empty there."

"Yeah I believe they stopped making those around the time the Cold War ended."

"Why on Earth would they do that?" he said, surprised.

"Because they already made better cars 20 years ago." she chuckles faintly.

"Well, surely the newer models would have all the latest features...like, um.

...Air conditioning?"

"GPS Navigation, keyless entry systems, heated seats, park assistance, bluetooth interface. Modern cars are really more computer than engine at this point. Not to mention that they go from zero to 60 in under 10 minutes."

"Your car needs to tell you where parks are?"

She lets out a laugh. "Well it can do that too, but it mostly parks the car by itself if I want."

"I'm not a fan of technology deciding what it will or will not do for me."

"Well you don't have to get all the bells and whistles but you won't get around a modern car having a board computer of some kind."

"Are they, y'know, bodgable? Can we take it out?"

"Not really. At the very least they optimize the engine. It's more electronics than mechanics these days."

"But I don't understand electronics. I knew how to fix my Trabant.

...When it wasn't blown into a thousand pieces."

"See the nice things about cars not built in communist Germany? They just work without needing to be fixed."

"You're telling me modern cars never break down," Roland said, putting the book down and looking at Nailah dubiously. "I've heard that before. Many, many, many times before."

"Well that'd be a slight exaggeration but thy certain break down much less than 30 year old cars."

"That," he said plainly, "is the way of everything built in the last two hundred years."

"Well unless you want to spend a lot of money at a car show I don't think you have much choice."

"Probably." Amanda said "Why not go to a car lot and take a look around? Assuming you don't just want to buy another Trabant."

"I'm fairly certain hat Trabants are mostly known for...not being the most stylish cars of their era." Amanda said, trying to be diplomatic.
