"Its why they were willing to give me a chance, yeah." Amanda said "Most of them have obvious physical mutations, and they've learned the hard way not to trust people who don't."

"I suppose there's a case to be made about the invisibility of non-physical mutations, but it seems rather fragile when you're one accident away from outing yourself to the community."

"Oh, it sucks either way." Amanda said "But even as far as physical mutations go, you and I aren't going to get the kind of negative attention that someone with a less photogenic mutation is."

"Its subtle." Amanda said "But you'll notice that all of the 'poster children' tend to have...lets say 'photogenic' mutations, if they have them, and they tend to have powers that are unambiguously usable for good. Its different someplace like Xaviers....but there are a lot of kids who first find out that they are not welcome in 'normal' society, and then find out that other mutants expect them to do a better job of fitting in."

"So they create the reverse situation to, what, prove a point? You have to be considered this ugly by society to be respected. I'll admit I haven't gotten around to reading your work on it yet, it just seems rather baffling. Afterall, we should all be on one side and not get bogged down in a contest who is the least privileged."

"I agree." Amanda said "And a lot of my work is done with the hope that I'll be able to help build bridges. I guess my point is that we are all in this together, and that one of the things that we can't lose sight of is that if it isn't safe to be a mutant who looks like Godzilla, then it isn't safe to be a mutant, period."

"Which is an interesting thing." Amanda said "It does make you wonder if some of the classical myths are ultimately the record of a earlier group of mutants. And if that is so, what happened?"
