Issue 1 Downtime

Solana had been wandering the campus for a couple of days, familiarizing herself with the place. She'd taken a break from that though to sit in the common room with her guitar. There was some staff paper on the table in front of her, but at the moment she seemed content to strum on the guitar and stare at the air. Occasionally, the guitar made strange noises that no acoustic version of the instrument should be capable of.

"What is that, a Fender?" Will asked, after stopping to listen for a few minutes.

"One of their cheaper models, but yes," she said, sitting up and strumming again.

"Which part? The occasional strumming or the strange noises?" She strummed and the sound morphed into a cat's meow.

She smiled, "I heard the X-Corp reps refer to me as 'Songweaver' when they thought I wasn't listening. My name's Solana."

"Possibly," she said, playing a few chords with no distortion. "Strictly amateur of course. I usually do more singing that playing."

"If I make a mistake, I cheat," she said. "And I'm performing for myself as much as anyone else. I can see the sound, so I get a light show every time I perform."

"Similar. It is hard to explain since no one can see it except me." She picked a bit at the guitar. "So you're a music student as well?"

"Stage solidarity," she said, holding up a fist for him to bump. "I like it. So where are you from?"

"Ah, American," she said, with a tone that made it had to tell whether that was approval or disapproval. "Did you like growing up in America?"

"Mostly, yeah. Things went different when the mutation kicked in, but I can't complain before that at all."

"A content American, I'm amazed," she said with a laugh. "Of course, I mostly dealt with tourists, so I suppose my impressions are a little one-sided."

"Colombian," she corrected. "Nearly as bad. Though my home town really doesn't lend itself to the typical Spring Break crowd."

"The world tends to have a very dim view of us," she said. "Assuming we're all running drugs or some other related nonsense." She picked a few angry notes on the guitar.

A pause.

"...coffee?"

She snorted and laughed, "Yes, coffee. And music." She played a tune that Will had certainly never heard before, but fiery and sad all at the same time.

Will sat quietly and listened. "Very pretty. Did you write that?"

She shook her head, "No, I wish I had. Someone in the band at my father's club wrote it and taught me how to play it. There are words, but only in Spanish. And it's not the sort of thing that the people who came to my father's club wanted to hear."

"Not really a night club, but sort of like that."

"Sometimes. I started singing during the earlier hours when the crowds weren't as big. Singers cost money and it let my dad save a little and let me do something I love. Then, once I got older, I started singing during the evening hours."
