Issue 1 Downtime

Laura sat down with a humph as she tossed her duffle bag onto an empty bed. The rest of the room was unoccupied and she wasn't sure whether that was a coincidence or intentional. Deciding that she might as well look the place over, she stood back up, stepping out into the hallway and looking up and down it.

Janice gave an awkward wave to the girl sticking her head out, as she returned from the bathroom.

Laura waved back, less awkwardly. "I didn't expect a dorm to be this quiet," she said, by way of introduction.

"Well it's not like it's Animal House," she chuckled.

"Thank god for that. I don't think I could handle that." She approached Janice, her wings now visible. "I'm Laura."

"The paper pusher who left me here told me to keep my nose clean if I wanted to stay," she said with a shrug. "I'm not inclined to argue with her at this point."

She shrugged, "Not a big deal. You know what they say about 'it's only a problem if you get caught.' I got caught and the school I was "attending"..." She actually made air quotes with her fingers, "... decided they didn't want me."

"It isn't," she said. "All natural."

"I would imagine so," she said, shaking her head. Her hair furled out and turned blonde, approximating Janice's hair. She shook her head again and her hair went back to its normal state.

Janice was briefly surprised, but chuckled. "So it's totally natural, but you like it purple."

"No, this seems to be it's natural state. They knocked me out a couple of times when they were testing me in high school to see what I reverted to."

"I wasn't trying to, honestly," she said. "But eventually someone put two and two together and came up with eight and figured something was going on."

"It's weird. Any time I want to look like me, the wings come out. I can't just do 'me with no wings'. Can't figure out why."

"Not really," she said. "Specific person helps, but I can't even do that properly." She shook her head again and she took on Janice's appearance, more or less appropriately scaled to her height. It was good, but Janice could see things she'd missed. "I'm sure I've screwed up a few things," she said, her voice mostly matching Janice's.
