One might well ask why Samantha had left the dorm in her pajamas that night. One also might ask why it took her awhile to get back, particularly if they saw the silly grin on her face as she tried to quietly come back in...

Unfortunately, Becca and Nailah seemed to have noticed the open door to Sam's room and the empty bed and thus had turned the couch towards the door and were sitting on it, waiting for her to come back.

"Where do you think you're sneaking off to in the middle of the night, young lady?" Nailah asks, having a hard time not snickering.

Samantha got a blush to her cheeks, but then narrowed her eyes at Nailah.

"Well he's got a bit more reach than me, but late at night his shields start to get a little weaker as he gets tired, and he just can't help but get some of the emotions around the campus."

"And he notices that a lot of people get kind of lonely at night, so he goes up there to kind of try to... help?"

"I know it sounds weird, but it's really sweet of him, I think."

"You're making it sound creepy. That's not really what he does. It's just like... okay, say you're feeling really lonely and you just get this sort of warm sensation, and you don't feel so all alone. He's not changing anything just... backing you up?"

That comparison seemed to pacify Becca a bit. Then she frowned. "You know, Nailah... that still doesn't explain that goofy smile she had on her face, does it?" she mused, her smirk returning.
