Reading is an adventure

Samantha hadn't been avoiding her dorm room. Not consciously, at least, especially after the shower incident.

Regardless, if she found some time to herself in the library, what was the harm in that? Thus there she was, browsing the shelves.

Really, hiding from her roommates in the library was kind of like trying to avoid getting wet by going to the pool. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to Sam when Nailah walks around the corner of one of the shelves, a book in her arm.

"Oh, hey there Nailah," she said with a faint smile.

"Needed something for class?"

"Yeah..." she scrunches up her face. "Ms. Frost has us reading The House on Mango Street next."

"I guess that kind of fits with the whole mutant thing, in a way."

"I guess. So, you here for school stuff too?" she teases, looking at the shelf Sam has been browsing.

"It's just kind of nice and quiet, aye?"

"Yeah..." she says, not sure if she should take that as a hint or not. "I can leave you alone if you want..."

"No, it's okay. How's your day been?"

"Okay, I guess. Kinda not been paying too much attention in class..."

"Just... trying to figure things you, you know? That whole thing with Becca..."

"Well I'm just not sure what to think. That kind blind-sided me too, you know?"

"I'm just kind of in the dark about this sort of thing. Not anything you get prepared for, aye?"

"It doesn't seem all that different than..." Paying a bit more attention to the expression on Sam's face she trails off. "Right. Sorry." she says quietly.

"No, no, it's okay. You need to be able to talk about this stuff, and I shouldn't be an obstacle to that."

"You're not an obstacle. You're just... uncomfortable with it. I understand that."

"Aye, but I need to stop being uncomfortable with it."

"You really wanna talk about me kissing Becca..." she asks carefully. And in bit of a hushed voice so someone just happening to pass nearby won't hear her.

"I've got to get used to it somehow, Nailah."

"Fine..." she says and glances around before dragging Sam over to one of the tables at the far end of the library.

"So... well... that whole thing was pretty confusing, right? I mean it's not like I really had a good grip on what was going on and then you ran away and everything was weird and... anyway, yeah, so after Becca pushed you out she tried to calm me down..."

"Yeah... And everything was so... I don't know. Unstable? I was, like, free-falling But she was there and I don't really know what happened but I kissed her and everything was just kind of fuzzy..."

"But it's like... was that just cause I was sad over you and, I dunno, trying to replace you or something? I mean that'd be totally unfair to her..."

"Don't worry about it. That's the same thing she said and she didn't even believe that herself." Nailah mumbles.

"We're a lot alike, you know? Neither of us wants to be worried about."

"Which gets bloody silly when we try to talk to each other about stuff that matters, aye?"

"Kinda does, yeah." she's forced to admit.

"So let's take it as given then that the lot of us are too worried about each other, and the prospect of hurting one another, to ever do it intentionally."

"Of course! I'd never do that on purpose." she says, almost sounding a little offended that that somehow needed to be pointed out.

"Of course she does. I'm not worried about her thinking I did it on purpose. I'm worried about her getting hurt!" she frowns.

She's loud enough to cause a "Shh!" from somewhere which prompts an unusual glare from the Sphinx in that general direction.

"Yeah well 'Don't worry about it' hasn't been exactly helpful so far."
